Any Cello players here?
Any Cello players here?
Just looking for a bit of inspiration. Next month I am going to start taking lessons. Never played one before. Where are your tracks and video's so I can soak up some cello love

Yes. I'm no Cellist but I find Kristin's music definitely inspirational. Do yourself a favour & visit her website to listen to some of her amazing music. She has some wonderful compositions on her Cello using looping.

Cellos are beautiful, but dont forget the immediacy of playing it percussively. Bouncing the bow on a string (like a stick on a drumhead) while holding one note is instant pleasure!

Re: Any Cello players here?
Thanks FunkN and Art Punk!
Gjm, cello 'is' an awesome instrument (and I'm saying this from the perspective of a composer, live looper and former multi instrumentalist).....so, great choice.
As nowtime is suggesting, it's capable of making lots of interesting sounds acoustically which lends itself extremely well to live looping. So, not surprisingly, there are an increasing number of cellists (and other bowed string players in general) turning to live looping.
Established live looping cellists include Zoe Keating and Julia Kent.
I would highly recommend checking out Erik Friedlander as an exceptional contemporary cellist and improvisor. (Great technique)
Giovanni Sollima, Italian Cellist and Composer is simply wonderful here IMHO...

Classically, the Bach cello suites are of course beautiful, as is the more recent Solo Cello Sonata by Kodaly.
Enjoy!!

Re: Any Cello players here?
Thanks Forge. I'm surprised you cant find any music on my website?
(I actually have two, one is http://www.theunconventionalcellist.com and the other is a live looping tutorial site that I'm 'slowly' setting up, http://www.theunconventionallivelooper.com)
Alternatively you can go to youtube http://www.youtube.com/user/KristinRule
Most of my uploaded stuff is from my 2010 album, 'The Knife that Cut's a Tear". The tracks were originally composed for a boss RC 50 loopstation which is a fairly limiting device. (I later tweaked the compositions using Ableton to better match the studio recording, ie, individual line panning, fades, ect, the things I couldn't do using the loopstation ... the form and content remain the same).
You can watch me using the loopstation live here (2010): https://vimeo.com/13531663.
All the best!

If I could marry an instrument, it would be the Cello!krulecello wrote:Thanks Forge. I'm surprised you cant find any music on my website?

Checked out your vimeo link, awesome stuff! Reminds me of the Game of Thrones theme, which is amazing as well!

Re: Any Cello players here?
I would love to learn cello, like many on here my favorite string instrument that can convey so much emotion just on its own. But I wouldn’t imagine it going over too well living in an apartment, especially in the beginning of just learning.

Re: Any Cello players here?
Thanks geekbeats, Forge, your comments are much appreciated.
beats me, they have all sorts of cello mutes that can dampen the sound considerably....and the beg cellist sound is much nicer than that of the beg violinist.
I have used the mutes in hotel rooms and people have not heard me practising in nearby rooms. So, I guess I'm saying, if you'd love to learn cello, don't let the apartment thing hold you back.

Re: Any Cello players here?
Before I moved to a completely laptop setup with controllers n such.
i started out playing experimental cello, processing with a pile of various analog fx pedals n loopers, with no cello training behind me, it was a wonderfully open experience.
now i process the cello in Live etc..
here's a link to some of my early highly experimental cello noise work, its my old flash based website,
