Hi All
Thinking about adding a mic to my setup. Never had one before so not sure where to start. I use my virus ti polar as my soundcard so could plug it straight into that. I've heard my housemate playing some nice acoustic guitar that I'm keen to record. Any recommendations?

Audio Technica AT2035? Seems like a sensible choice for a first mic.

Cheers mate, will check it out!

For vocals: Studio Projects C1. A $250 mic that sounds like it's far more expensive, http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/C1Mic/reviews
For instruments, no experience there sorry.

Hi, if you are recording in a non treated room i will not bother with a condenser, they tend to pick up much more ambient than dynamics, might not work for you.
on a budget :
shure sm 57 , good all round microphone, you can get a decent sound on anything, just don't expect to be super bright or smooth.
cascade fathead, great inexpensive microphone, it's a ribbon so it fears hi spl and air blast, but it's a great mic to record basically anything, for some reasons that i don't understand it has quite a rejection to the ambient even being a figure of 8
around 300 :
electro voice re 20, great great mic, you can find one used on ebay easily, great on anything, plus superb at vocals, kick drum and bass cab, really a must have!
shure sm7 : good results on a lot of things, probably not the best for acu guit but great on a lot of stuff and with great rejection.
hope that help.
