Vinyl Sampling Setup...

Post by Regrind » Wed Jul 03, 2013 9:46 am

I've done enough digital sampling to know that I'd like to branch out into crate digging. I've found a few good sources for quality and obscure vinyl. Now to setup a rig.
A friend bought me a Vibe USB record player. I read up on it and it's blah.
So I'm thinking about trying it out first but looking at Craigslist and might buy a Technics SL-2000.
My question is this, what turntable would you recommend? And what more would I need?
Could I just run RCA to TRS into my AudioBox and have relatively good sound quality or would I need a phono preamp?
Thanks.

What's your budget?

There are a great many turntables to choose from. If you're using it purely for ripping then a hifi deck should suffice (won't be as rugged as a DJ deck).

Don't skimp on the cart/stylus. That's the part that translates the grooves to sound, so it's crucial.

Yes you will need a preamp. The signal from a turntable is tiny, and needs RIAA EQ applied.

There are some decks with line outputs/USB outputs/digital outputs etc. and they're not all cheap plastic ones. Depends on what you're prepared to spend...

Ideally under $250.
I searched the interwebz for a preamp and a few tables. I think I need to chill and take the time to read reviews and forums.
My buddy said that if I'm just going to be chopping drums and leads that the USB should be enough, for now. I'd rather have the sound quality speak for itself than have to tweak the samples later.

I have a Numark USB turntable with RCA outs. It sounds great. You shouldn't spend a bunch of money if you're just sampling. Mine sounds great. Check out some of my vinyl sampling stuff at www.soundcloud.com/gradynickel

I use the audio technica atlp120-USB USB turntable. I connect it directly to my emu 1616m and it rips my records really well for chopping purposes. Amazon has it on sale for 200 sometimes. The stock cartridge for it is ok.

^^^Went with that TT. Installed the Shure M97xe. Sounds great. I bought an ART pre as the onboard pre isn't all that great. But thanks for the reccomedation.
