Easy way to record for a preset number of bars?
Easy way to record for a preset number of bars?
Hi-
I'm making drum loops and I want to record for, say, 4 bars, and then have it loop. It's tough to hit the control button while drumming and not screw up. Anyone have an easy way to do this? Only way I've been able to rig so far is sending out a MIDI note though the Mac MIDI bus and then sending it back into Ableton and mapping that to a particular clip slot. Thing is it's annoying to have to pre-map each clip and use up MIDI slots that might accidentally get overwritten in the future.
I know you can pre-set a midi clip and use overdub if it's a MIDI clip, but what about Audio clips? There's no overdub option.
Also, any way (at all) to delete clips via a control button?
Thanks!

Read the manual section on Recording. Arrangement "punch-in" and "punch-out" is what you may want

I think I want that function, but in clip view because I'm creating live loops

there is a max4live patch for that in the max4live library, but I don't remember the name...I'm making drum loops and I want to record for, say, 4 bars, and then have it loop.

No you don't need M 4 L
Just create an empty clip of the desired length in the clip slot. Then overdub record into that. Easy peasy Berlinesey.
What I sometimes do is to create a sersies of such clips, with follow actions set for the appropriate number of bars
I can then jam along with whatever other tracks are playing, over and over till all the clips are filled.

Basically what an mpc does? I've been asking this question for years and have yet to get a straight answer. For all of Live's brilliance, this is a major flaw. Seems like it would be an option. Even my kaoss pad does this.
iMac, MacBook Pro, Live Suite, Reason, Logic Pro, Melodyne, FL Studio, iConnect Audio4+, Little Martin, ukelele, Greco gtrs, pedalboard, amps, mics .

I thought ClyphX offered some kind of solution to create new loops and made the loop length dependant on what the global quantize was set at.
However that may have been a dream.
The Live Object Model offers a call to record for a predetermined length.
I've only accessed such things using M4L, but if you're savvy enough, or know someone who is, you could probably script something that would work.

If you have an apc40 get a footswitch
Re: Easy way to record for a preset number of bars?
another angle...
set quantize to the desired length
as the set plays hit record on the clip
when the '1' comes around recording will start
hit record on the clip again, shortly after the recording begins
the recording will stop at the quantize setting
foot pedals can help, I've also looped midi notes back into Live as control data to do this on a more automated way.
