Re: Upcoming laptops for us producers
After 6 months of comparison between pretty much everything high end on the market, I've finally purchased a full spec Aorus X7 (Gigabyte's top brand and hackintosh -able).
I'm so impressed of the first week test that it needs to be shared. Specs below are self explanatory but what it does not say is that:
1/ Apple is NO longer the only one doing sleek design, no flex computers full of good, well conceived tech surprises when unboxing.
2/ Load any super heavy Live9&rewire session in silence. The strong cooling system built for the GTX SLI inside... also cools down the CPU, which does not throttle at all and runs at nearly full power (3.28Ghz) in full silence as the GPU is not in use (room at 20°C).
3/ Bring the power adapter with you, anytime. You can barely watch a 2.30hours movie or use Ableton (heavily) 2hours.
4/ Aorus is marketed for gamers but in real it does not look pimped at all... not as much as there marketing BS.
Processor: 4th Generation Intel® Core™ i7 processor
32GB of RAM in quad channel (4*1600Mhz?)
Storage: 2*1TB samsung EVO mSATA = 2TB in raid 0 + 1 1.5TB 2.5" HDD, 3.5TB in total @noVSTlimitation @nosamplelimitation, no disc
GPU: who cares? SLI, 2*Nvidia GeForce GTX 765M for pushing several 4K screens full of rewire DAWs at the same time (Good also for gaming maybe but will not try that one use, life is short).
Display: 17" HD (1920X1080) , Anti-glare, none IPS but really good.
Physical dimensions: sleek and under 3Kg which is great for what you carry with you. Sleeve: Burnooa 17S. true numbers: http://www.aorus.com/x7.aspx
Ports: 1 mDP, 2HDMI, 5 USB, 1 audio out, 1 audio in, (hum.. Motu Microbook does the job better) Card Reader, ethernet with killer N tech, AC Widi compatible wifi
One cool surprise feature: Macro Keys (5*5 functions) which do work with all my Ableton shortcuts : )
Adios Apple - from dust to dust
Custom built by Anyware PC near Paris, delivered there after 8 days.

Re: Upcoming laptops for us producers
Starts at 2000€ and you can double it with options...
Re: Upcoming laptops for us producers
this machine you can get as desktop for 600 € - so if you do not plan to travel with your music - go for a desktop and buy a strong notebook later - when you already have some tracks.
Re: Upcoming laptops for us producers
+1. I've built my computer 4 (!) years ago, an Intel i5 760 with a GTX 460 videocard. Still doing the job till this day on. I've yet have to see it stretched to the full limits (however, I've seen it with a few games I played at 1920*1080 at highest level of quality).Tagor wrote:this machine you can get as desktop for 600 € - so if you do not plan to travel with your music - go for a desktop and buy a strong notebook later - when you already have some tracks.
However, maybe in a couple of years I'm going for the big upgrade with a i7-processor and a big ass motherboard. I saved some money on my motherboard, not so clever after all.
Re: Upcoming laptops for us producers
Tagor: depending on how folks work, you are spot on. I run a stronger production desktop (i7 3820) at home and a much weaker laptop (i3) for gigs. Since I'm bouncing down to audio stems anyway, the simpler laptop works just fine for some 8-16 track APC40 action on the go.
Going about it that way can get you both a strong desktop and a lean laptop for under the price of 1 beastly laptop. Still, it depends how someone wants to work and if they have space for both at home.

Re: Upcoming laptops for us producers
Wow, I like the Aorus' design, especially with the two GPUs on separate fans and those fans splitting the heat dissipation from the CPU.
Maybe a competitor for Asus' ROG line, of which I have an older one. The only drawback is I've never heard of Aorus or their track record.
Edit: Found a possible drawback. Aorus only come with a maximum memory of 8 GB. If I recall correctly, Apple's MBP you can get up to 16 GB, and Asus newest ROGs come with up to 32 GB. 8 GB is no slouch for office software, but if you run a lot of sample libraries in a given project, you may need more memory. I wouldn't go with anything less than 16 GB, and if I couldn't afford it, I'd take another job or wait until I had the money.

get a mac tbh
Re: Upcoming laptops for us producers
I have that HP Envy. I got it because of the balance between power and having touch.
I haven't really put it through the paces though so I don't really have any way to review it. I find myself tinkering on my iPhone's synths more than anything else haha My previous laptop is used for internet and quick-n-dirty Ableton Live ideas. So my new one is snappy and lovely but I never use it :/
