How to add MIDI CC automation to TRACK instead of CLIP?

Post by UltimateOutsider » Sat Aug 24, 2013 8:35 pm

I'm trying to put together a little demo track for the Virus TI that will work in Live 8. I've got the Virus Control plugin loaded on one track, and each instrument part is pumping MIDI to the track where the plugin is loaded. I want to automate filter cutoff and resonance on one of the MIDI parts, and I set up my bass patch to adjust those parameters via MIDI CC 03 and 09 and the mod matrix. I am able to automate both parameters at the CLIP level (as shown in my screenshot; I've got an envelope for CC 3 there), but I cannot figure out how to add an automation lane to the TRACK so I can edit it in the Arrangement view.

As shown, the Add Automation Lane option is grayed out; I think that only adds a lane for an automation parameter you already have selected on the track. The Fades/Devices chooser only shows "None" and "Mixer"- there's no option for me to specify what I want to automate.

I discovered I could unlink my automation envelope from the clip, however it's hard to see what I'm doing down there, relative to the track, and there still appear to be some clip-related limitations to what I can do there.

So my question is: How can I do track-level automation of a MIDI CC on a MIDI track in Live 8 that doesn't have a VSTi loaded in it?

Thanks.

I think you need to create a Max for Live device for this. You can automate a [live.dial] while it outputs a MIDI CC. Be sure to check "Defer Automation Output" in the [live.dial]'s inspector.
