Which settings allow samples to be played from the browser?

I am unable to audition samples by clicking on it from the browser. I've been able to play samples before but all of a sudden it was not possible. I can't figure out what I may have changed in the settings if that. Hope any one can help. thanks.

make sure the headphone button above the browser is highlighted.
turn up the solo/cue knob. and make sure the solo/cue output is active in the master channel (such as assigned to 1/2)

I tried it but the solo/cue button is stuck on solo. I've uninstalled and reinstalled. I didn't get a clean uninstall so the settings were inherited. My current sound card is M audio audiophile 2496. Thanks for the response. Hope you can help.
