alias(mac)/shortcut(pc) folders not working in live9 browser
alias(mac)/shortcut(pc) folders not working in live9 browser
Hello i noticed a lot of people complaining about the new live 9 browser but no one specifically asking about alias folder (called shortcut folder in PC) to be back in use...
The ability of using alias was an important part of the workflow for many people...
i make some examples:
djing with live: music collection organized in folders by genre and sub genres i have some "duke ellington" tracks in jazz, minimaltek, house etc folders...but i would like to have a folder "duke ellington" with aliases pointing to the tracks or viceversa...
drums collection organized by kits folders (house, tek, dub step etc) but i would like to have also folders "snare", "cymbals" etc wit aliases pointing to house snare, tek snare, dub step snare...
there are also many other ways of using them...
i know probably a lot of people never used aliases ever in their life but for people who did ...the new browser can be really ennoying..
i heard that there are tech workarounds for pc...any workaround for mac...??

This. Without a doubt. I definitely organized folders of shortcuts to folders in the past.
Was a little disappointed to see that they'd disappeared.

workarounds?
of course i can duplicate or triplicate all my samples in different folders but i would rather find a more elegant solution ...

i haven't tried it with the Live browser, but i would guess that on OS X using either symbolic links or hard links (instead of the the aliases that you create in the Finder) would work:
http://macs.about.com/od/faq1/f/What-Ar ... c-Os-X.htm
you would have to be careful not to inadvertently setup any infinite loops with your links though, as they might well confuse the fuck out of Live's database indexing system...

Thanks Fishmonkey...i tried but symlinks also not working...i havent tried hard links but i guess would be the same...
i think the only way is to duplicate triplicate samples in different folders...or stick to live 8...

Obvious solution is tag based rather than folder based organization in Live browser.
Probably not likely any time soon....

did you tried symbolic link?
Re: alias(mac)/shortcut(pc) folders not working in live9 browser
yes "pencil rocket" i tried symbolic links and its not working...
you are right "The finn" obviously a full configurable tagged database would be the best option and probably this is where ableton is aiming too...
meanwhile i gave up on the idea of duplicating folders not only for space reason but also because then samples would then appear doubled in the search...
i think i will think a way to re-configure my collection from the scratch maybe adding tag like names in the folders in order to exploit the new fast searching feature...

I'd love if they would implement tagging!!!!!!!
It would drastically improve the browsing/searching/Push experiences. The question is, Where would a person go about 'tagging' things??? It sounds like it'd require some kind of extra window somewhere.

Just remove the 'alias' extension set by mac and the file should be visible in Ableton's browser
