Audio degradation when flattening over and over?

Post by 2pauluzz2 » Wed Dec 04, 2013 12:35 pm

Hi everyone,

Lately I've been battling my Macbook Pro's CPU load. I don't want to sacrifice plugins like the Slate Digital VTM, Lexicon reverbs en certain eq's and compressors so I find myself Freeze > Flattening a lot.

So I might treat drums with a tape saturation plugin, compression and some EQ - then freeze and flatten it and do this in a give project lots of times for the same channel. These are all slight changes, some different colors from various eq's etc.

What are your thoughts on printing stems like this over and over again? Is it common practice, nothing to worry about? Or will this seriously degrade the audio quality in the end?

Thanks :)
Paul

On an unserious note, if anything it'll add phatness.

On a serious one, most people who I've seen mention using that method seem to be much more productive.

Haha, thanks. The productivity note made me laugh because whenever I find myself stuck going around in circles, it's mostly because I'm asking myself questions about whether my approach is the right one, whether I'm not overlooking anything etc- just like with this topic. I probably just need to shut my insecure self up and finish the darn thing.

Just make sure when you flatten you turn off warping for the new audio file, it's at the project tempo now, no need to warp.

Yes that makes sense, thanks. Good to know I'm not messing up the quality of my samples :)

Cheers.
