Love it. I think about this a lot in my parts... I used to be obsessed with playing something perfectly. Now I throw something at the wall and warp/quantize. Lemme tell ya, they achieve different results.
Slightly different angle, but it was on my mind.
I wish my mixes sounded perfect!

Re: Play It Right The First Time
Funny how things parallel. I've been taking theory lessons, and we're back to basics. Going over off beats and complex rhythmic melodies etc. I'm both excited and humbled. I have really bad habits on keys related to certain guitar techniques like strumming slightly before the beat to get the full volume impact to match the drum hits. Works with latent electric guitars, not so much with keys.

Yeah, a theory refresher is something I've been considering lately too, it's been awhile!

Yeah taking it slow is the best idea.
I was recently trying to blow through under the bridge because it sounds so simple, but when I really learned the chords I had no choice but to take it slow because the beginning of that song is extremely difficult.
I still cant play it though.

Thanks for sharing Tarekith,
I'm sure a lot of people think practicing is boring or whatever, but I find it can be quite meditational. I get a lot of good thinking done during practice too. At first its not too fun, but then I get into a zone.
I read somewhere else that (I don't remember where) that if you want to learn a part really well to slow way down and practice it about twenty times and to do this everyday for twenty days and you should be able to bring it up to speed. I like to do this, I cant say that it is 100% true, but I definitely notice good improvements.

Slowing down and really visualizing the the hard parts has really been the key for me lately. I always like to try and become a faster player, but it's been pretty obvious lately how sloppy I am when I do that. Been using a metronome a lot while practicing too, never did that before

This response is regarding guitar practice. I'm a drummer and I was always a sloppy guitar player until I went through a book that stressed the importance of 'proper practice' which is based on extremely slow movements and repeating the proper body positions while paying attention to relaxing and releasing all unnecessary tension. Now I am very satisfied with the level of my guitar playing, and interested in applying these concepts to other instruments.
