how quick is the transfer of wavs btw?
I`ve had one of those early netMD`s, and they`re not what you would call fast..

wav 16bit 44.1 recording on the MD recorder image as posted above.
transfer of the wav to my PC ... I've mainly been moving shorter clips back and forth so can't give you an accurate answer. It is USB1 speed which I think is 12 mb/s, but don't quote me on that. Very useable though, I've never found it to feel slow.
Next time I'm doing a full 1 GB wav transfer I'll time it and let you know. I'm curious myself as to how long it will take. 5 and 10 minute things take a few seconds.

If only it came in Midnight Blue or Metallic Gray I'd be interested.

Man, I hope my MD doesn't die after 13 months..
Yeah, you can use USB to transfer directly from the recorder to your computer, but then you need to use Sony's WAV converter tool to convert from the proprietary format.
I just checked transfer speed. and for a 55 second file it was 33 seconds to transfer, and about 2 seconds to transfer to WAV. I don't know if that tells you anything. I'm using the highest quality setting before linear (PCM) which I know takes longer to transfer.

I use a Fostex FR2 hard disk recorder - it'll phantom power a shotgun mic
and can record up to 192k and 24bit altho i tend to use it 24bit 48k mostly
It has pre-record too, so when u hit record its already been buffering 10 seconds
of sound.... the FR2 is good altho it uses AA batterys so had to get an external
camera battery & now will run for 10 hours + before needing a charge
It records to PCMIA drives or CFC flash cards.... Very clean mic preamps,
you can crank a quiet ambience massively without bringing up preamp noise
& when u take the headphones off its startling how much gain is being added
But pricewise u could probably buy ten MD recorders for one FR2...

I'm using my DV camera to record nature sounds. Mostly I use the built-in mics for this (OK if the ambience being recorded is loud enough to cover the faint "whine" of the camera) But I'm looking at getting the Rode NT-4 stereo mic.
With DV I just capture the video and audio into my mac via firewire and then extract the audio files.
The video is a good "notepad/index" of what I recorded, and the video gets used as fodder for out live gigs.

Cool. I've the black one too. This is my 3rd Sony MD portable recorder and has been excellent so far.
Check out this
http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?s= ... topic=9752 just incase you need to enable the full functionality available on the Japanese model. Some overseas versions are pre-configured with limitations that can be lifted quite easily by the user.
I use an Audio-technica AT9860 microphone.
Very good for field recording. Great stereo space.

i have done a cd collection of nature sound ,i went in the jungle ,sea front ,a few other forests & i used a laptop running cubase vst with a edirol usb sound card & the mics were 2 se2000. everything was powered with a car batery .the main tric is to stand at least 100 meters from the mics as you keep on making noises & put the mics at least 10 meters apart if you want to have a proper stereo sound & not too close from any ojects like trees or dense forest.(the heaviest thing in the backpack was the batery & the cables)

I'm an iPod user but I imagine they work in a similar way...
Does the IRIVER appear as a hard drive on your PC when it is connected? If so, locate the file it has recorded and copy it to your PC.
If not, does the IRIVER come with software allowing you to maintain it? Does this software allow you to move files other than music?
Failing that, can you play the sounds and record them onto your PC using a suitable lead (depends on your soundcard inputs).
