Mavericks / Live9 Performance: 40% CPU and no playback

Post by trennscharf » Mon Feb 17, 2014 8:14 pm

Hi!

Since a while I have serious performance issues running my Macbook Pro Mid 2011.
(i7 w/ 4Cores and 8GB RAM + SSD) is running Live 9.1.1 at 512 Samples. OSX Mavericks.
Edirol FA-66 as FW Audio. (Even with 1024 Samples it is unusable)

Example Project:
27 Tracks (mostly Audio - but maybe up to 8 Synths per Project) with EQs, Compressors, Reverbs, Delay etc. per Track

Behaviour when playing the project

Activity Monitor in OSX shows:
- Ableton Index not responding up to 20% CPU when playing
- Ableton Live 120% to 210% CPU

Live´s CPU Meter shows:
- 70-80% when playing

Now the strangest part:
- 35% CPU load in Live9 when IDLE - means not playing anything - WTF???

Does anyone has similar experiences?

Is there any way to analyse what plugin or track is causing this high CPU load?

cheers
Dominik

Remove them until it goes away.

sure - or just buy more and better HW. Jokes aside - is there no way to analyse the CPU load in Ableton per Track or Plugin? I am pretty sure that there has to be a Dev mode or something...

Im sure there is when performance counters are compiled in, but unlikely in the shipping version. There is probably a plugin that runs really badly on mavericks.

I have sometimes seen a track that gets stuck on quite high CPU use when nothing is playing on mountain lion - its usually a delay or reverb (I think usually aether or breeze or rp-verb or rp-delay). Usually quitting and restarting live makes the problem go away.

What plugins are you using?

obviously too many ;-)

I use all the time the following:

- NI Komplete Synths (FM8, Massive, Absynth)
- NI Effects (Guitar Rig and Solid Series)
- Waves SSL Comp
- Waves PuigTec
- Tal Synths and Effects (Juno and Chorus)
- many Ableton Comps, Reverbs and Delays

looks like it´s simply too much.

My Mastering Chain causes 10% load when not playing.
Disabling all the other effects and instruments is taking 1-2% away per track. So if I disable everything I get down to 0% but all when not playing - this is very strange.

How can all these plugins eat CPU when nothing is happening...when I hit play - the CPU meter jumos from 35% to 70%.

I don't know about 3rd party plugins, but some of Ableton effects & Max for Live devices use CPU even when disabled. I haven't tested this with Live Instruments.
