Performing with session view – clicks finally gone!!!!

Post by nemoy » Mon Feb 24, 2014 11:49 pm

Hey there!

For quite some time now I've been trying to figure out why i've got that much clicking in my live sets.
Basically:

- every two bars sometimes every 4 bars, Clicks. (on every channel)
- whenever I played drums with a drumrack, shitloads of clicks.
- looped audio clips clicked whenever they jumped back to the beginning of the loop

so here's what i found out:
in Arrangement view (which i basically never use) there was a loop defined,
in some sets two bars, in some sets 4 bars... loop (a button I've never touched) was activated too.
So everytime it jumped back to the beginning of that loop in arrangement view i didn't need,
there where audible clicks in session view on basically every channel.

Another thing, that caused a lot of clicks:
When a channel with a drumrack is selected, Ableton tries to update
the Display, to always show the waveform of the one Cell, that is played.
So when you play fast and alternating notes, there's a god damn lot of clicks
caused by just that! even, if you minimize the drumrack/instrument rack

-> selecting another channel helps, and the clicks are gone.

And last but not least: Complex Pro algorythm always clicked
when looping. change to complex, beat, or whatever else, and it's ok.

I really wonder, if someone else has similar problems with clicks,
and if so, if those three things help?

Cheers!! Hope this helps someone out there...

You should definitely send a bug report to the support, especially regarding your 1st point (loop in arrangement).

I've had clicks with a Pro warping method in one of my clips as well in Live 9.1.1 recently and "solved" it by applying consolidate function. Unfortunately, there is no way back once consolidate is applied. I wonder if clicks were caused by high CPU usage, although Live CPU meter showed only about 70%.

Anyway, there are always still things to fix.

Complex pro has clicked since it was added in Live 8. for some reason I have never reported it cause I'm just too lazy and figured someone else would report it. 4 years later...still clicky

consolidate is for arrangement view, isn't it?

i mean, i've been thinking about this quite a lot:
if the time stretch method uses a lot of CPU, why not just render the stretched clip
and then swap it, so there won't be any real time timestretching anymore.

But to do so, you would have to export single clips and then swap them.
is there some consolidate function for session view too? (or an easier way to do this?)

nemoy, just copy your warped clip to arrangement, consolidate it there and bring the consolidated clip back to session view.
