Live sampling

Post by fcarroll » Tue Feb 25, 2014 10:19 am

Hi folks,

Anyone know of an Ableton device or m4l device that you can capture live audio and play back instantly on midi keyboard. i.e. the Sampler device but send the audio into it live.

Cheers

This is just a bit tricky because of the architecture of live : a track is midi OR audio. (no, im not mentioning another software...)
I've done things like this but it involves having two tracks and two 'modules' linked with send objects : one for the recording and one for the playing.
MacBook Pro 13" Retina i7 2.8 GHz OS 10.13, L10.0.1, M4L.
MacStudio M1Max 32Go OS 12.3.1

Thanks, that is really cool, but looking for to capture the audio sample live and play back instantly on a midi keyboard so the sample will pitch with the semi tones. Hope this makes sense. But this is a really cool patch.

This is certainly an age old problem. I'd love to see a solution in the near future! There are so many things that are Close. Looper lets you record audio as a device and play/change speed. Simpler/Sampler accept audio clips. Live's clips can be mapped to midi and transpose.

I want OP-1 inside of Live!

In the meantime, I think Geist might do it? And Maschine does for sure. In Maschine, I've even recorded empty melodic and percussive patterns of notes (empty as in, no sample assigned, yet). And Then sampled like a flute tone and some percussive sounds, which magically fill in those mysterious note arrangements :P fun stuff

ok.. you can do it with just Live's clips but there are limitations. the resulting samples can only be played monophonically, and are timestretched up the keyboard. it can work pretty well but might not be as 'traditional' as you're after.

- create an empty Audio Track in Session view and select an empty slot.
- Midi Map this slot to your keyboard by holding down keys C2, C3 and C4 simultaneously. this will play the sample you'll record into the slot over 2 octaves, with C3 as the orig speed.
- set the Global Quantize to None if you want to play the sample unquantized, and Record Arm the audio track.
- now, holding C3 will sample any incoming audio. let go, and it'll loop, but you can now play it across the keyspan.
