Sample library on a Mac....
Sample library on a Mac....
Finally made the switcheroo from PC to Mac and I regret not doing it sooner.
I transfered most of my sample library and came across a quandary about the filing system of OS X. I do my best at keeping all my shit nice and tidy, all samples are named and filed in individual folders. No probs there. But when I went to finder today I noticed that all of my samples were also in my "Music" folder. What's the reason for it and how can I remove them and keep the Music folder cleaned out. As it is now, there are 12,025 files in my Music folder. Oddly enough they're not organized at all. They're all in alphabetical order. I don't intend on loading a ton of music on this machine at all, but as it is it would be a pain to browse through the library.
Thanks for any input.

it might be this http://support.apple.com/kb/PH1006?view ... cale=en_US
if not, it's something similar. your music files are being auto filed "for you"...
i'd dig deeper, but i'm going to bed. good luck.

Re: Sample library on a Mac....
I read that and it's really not the solution. I agree with your idea of it filing it for me. I'll dig around with the filing setup and see what's up as I'm still noobin' it up on Mac. Thanks tho.

Re: Sample library on a Mac....
Yes, it is probably a problem with your Itunes settings. I run Live on a Mac and the sample files stay where they belongs, but I had to make sure Itunes did not scan and import every sound file on my hard drive
Re: Sample library on a Mac....
Could it possibly have something to do with this?

Hard links vs. actual duplicates. But I think this applies only to the Audio Music Apps folder inside user/Music.

You are talking about this folder?
Re: Sample library on a Mac....
@ renfield- yea. Looks like I'll just be leaving all the files where they're at. Seems like a waste of resources. I'll have to read more in depth later.
@ ansolas- yah. That's the group there. Same catogorization. "00clap.wav" etc...
It just doesn't make much sense to me. I thought iTunes and the accepted format of Mac was mp3 lossless?... I know that iTunes can be used to convert an mp3 to wav file but I didn't think all wav files would be saved in my music directory. With a 1TB SSD I'm not sweating duplicates too much, yet it's still ridiculous.

This "All my Files View" is just a kind of "Search" (Smart Folder) view.Regrind wrote:

see, it refering to a saved search.
/System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/MyLibraries/myDocuments.cannedSearch
No files are duplicated, they are just presented all together.
You can even create your own smartfolders and show for example all Files for a given Tag !
The Music Folder, however, is a 'real' folder.
So nothing to worry about nor to setup itunes.
Itunes has nothing to do with the OS X File system, but there is an option that iTunes manage Songs which has been added to it.
