THIS is what everybody wanted the Mk1 to be!!!!! This and everything else that's planned in the big 9.5 update are gonna be awesome!!!!

talking about a thread getting out of control :D

For those that didn't see it as obvious I meant the 32-bit version and now it is corrected in the first message :)

Yeah, sorry, we're just having a play

To reiterate a point, unless you go x64, adding ram does nothing.

that's not necessarily true.

if you are using a 64 bit operating system then although a 32 bit app has a < 4 GB memory limit, the whole system can be using more RAM.

i dunno about Apple's limit, but the RAM limit on a 32 bit (x86) Windows installation is 4 GB. so the only thing that could use "extra" RAM is an onboard graphics card. once you go 64 bit... then Windows home basic is limited to 8 GB. every other OS Windows makes is 16 GB and up.

it doesn't make much sense to be using a 32 bit OS these days.

i dunno about that... it doesn't make much sense to buy a 32 bit OS any more (IMO)... but using one isn't necessarily a matter of choice.

even new computers are still being shipped with 32 bit versions...

But it's true enough. If you need to exceed you the 4 GB limit, you need to be x64. There is really no way around it.

I made that switch years ago. It's been great. I'm a one man show, I rely heavily on ram hungry programs and I never have to worry about it anymore. It's the only way to fly :)

the point i'm trying to make is that if you are using a 32 bit operating system and 32 bit Live, then Live has to share the 4 GB address space with everything else, plus there is other reserverd RAM overhead depending on which OS you are using.

so a 64 bit OS with 32 bit Live will benefit from more than 4 GB of RAM...

agreed.

but Live can only use 2 or 3 GB according to this:

that limitation is when using 32 bit Windows. 32 bit Live on 64 bit Windows can use up to 4 GB.

Re the OP.

You have 8 GB. load up a monitor (Task Manger in Windows, Activity Monitor in Mac i think).

Do your thing in Live.

Check how much memory you have used up. If you have used up all 8 GB then maybe you could use more memory. However, if you have unallocated memory, and adding more memory that will not be allocated doesn't help at all.

good luck

Actually, Live 32 bits will crash when memory reaches a little less than 3 gigs...

It's worth it to make the 64bits switch!
MBP 2018, 16 GB Ram, OSX 10.15.7
MBP M1 Max 64 GB Ram, OSX 14.3.1
Live 10.1.43 Suite
Live 11.3.21
