trying to use controllers in arrangement mode
trying to use controllers in arrangement mode
Hi all,
I'm trying to get away from using the keyboard and mouse in arrangement mode.
I've been researching if there are ways to use a midi controller (like maschine, or any midi controller) to do minor edits and navigation in arrange mode
specifically things like:
deleting clips
splitting clips
consolidate clips
delete automation
I know you can map cue points in arrangement mode, but methinks doing something like this requires more than invoking live's built-in midi map mode.
Given the fact that even push is fairly limited in arrangement mode, I imagine this might be more complicated than it sounds, but I'm not too sure where to begin.
I would even be open to third-party software which takes CC messages and turns them into hotkeys (like delete, ctrl+e, etc... etc..)
any ideas?

+1 for Bome
For anything "outside the box" in terms of setting functions on controllers, Bome is pretty much king.
I have used Bome to use 2 buttons on my mouse even to zoom in/out along with quick edit shortcuts on my MCU for Duplicate/Metrenome/Overwrite/Split/Consolodate/Freeze etc.
I st5ill like keyboard and mouse for most editing tasks tho.

^ how are you doing freeze and zoom? (things that aren't triggered by the keyboard...)

Re: trying to use controllers in arrangement mode
I'm at work but I think for Freeze I created a"macro" that accesses one of the menus in Live and then jumps to the option all instantly so you don't notice the menu open.
For Zoom there certainly is keyboard shortcuts (+ -) for zoom and I just remap these to 2 mouse buttons on my mouse. Scroller wheel will scroll through ableton and mouse buttons will zoom in and out.
You need to spend a little time with Bome and possibly for MIDI controllers you need to create THRU connections using virtual MIDI ports so you can intercept some MIDI signals and convert while allowing others to pass through but once you get the hang of it almost anything is possible in terms of control and device mappings without needing to reprogram any hardware devices. I am using the paid version of Bome so there may be limitations in the free version. Well worth the coin.

@jestermgee
Would you be down to pm me your bome template file?
I'm trying to learn some of the functions you suggested in your last post but trial and error is making me nuts, ::bangs keyboard::
I think seeing a working example for a full mapping solution would really help.

For those who found this thread and are looking for a similar solution, I've posted my setup in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=204467
Bome's is great, but I've found a way to do this using free tools and with pretty lightweight software + a few midi remote scripts.
Using maschine to pretty much do everything I need in live's arrange mode an it works great!
