Laptop hard drive 5400 Rpm ?

Just a quick question please?

I have just had to but a new laptop (the old one gave up, don't ask) and I have managed to buy a new one today but I am completely out of money for the time being,

I know ideally you would want to have a hard drive running at 7200 Rpm but the current one install is a 1Tb 5400 rpm laptop.

So for live performance how badly would a 5400 rpm HD effects be?

I do record at home as well but would the slower drive be a major drop just now given that I can't afford to replace it at the moment?

It depends.

Can you make music with the drive? Yes.
Can you have 100+ tracks with lots of edits? No.

Somewhere in between is where you will be.

How do you use Live? I can make some songs with four tracks, some I need over forty.

I say just use it until you run into a problem. Then make submixes to keep the simultaneous track count down.

Hi buddy thank you so much for the reply.. I am quite track heavy tbh and I use it live for full sets with keyboards and orchestra bounced down into groups for on stage mixing..to Front of house stereo out.

I can probably use this hard drive until I can build up funds again (I have had to buy a lot of gear in the last two months) but ultimately this would be a short gap solution to play the gigs we have booked just now.. unless it's really bad!

I have never played with a hard drive that runs 5400 so I have no experience with how they perform?

My first laptop had a 4200 rpm drive, and I could playback dozens of 24bit tracks in the studio with no issues. It ran my 16 track live rig just fine as well. 5400 isn't ideal like you said, but I doubt you'll have many issues.

Also consider that Hard drive speed not only affects track count and ability to load large sample libraries but it also can affect boot up times, project loading, and general snappiness of machine.

Many people are using SSD drives for this. They are still a little costly though.

That said you still should be able to get by with 5400rpm.

You can always get an external faster bigger drive (USB3?) if you encounter any bottlenecks with track count and sample loading.

Have you replaced the 5400 in your old laptop for a 7200?
Manufacturers don't put the slower ones into laptop just for giggles. Heat management is a lot easier with them.
I'd opt for an external USB3-solution, too, though that means extra connections and PSU. You can't run 7200 on bus power.
