What is the point in warping?

Post by Vorb » Sun Jun 22, 2014 6:53 pm

I'm trying to create a DJ mix in Ableton... all of my tracks are 128 BPM so what is the point of warping the tracks? I find the fact that you have to manually warp every single track is an absolute waste of time. Is there a better way to put this mix together? Other programs? Anythign?

It's risky. Live often gets the BPM right but the transients wrong. Or a tack will drift out of sync.

Try doing it without warping.. see if you run into any issues with lining up beats.. if not.. happy days!

If you have problems with lining the beats up between 2 tracks.. time to warp

Has the technlogoy not been made where it warps the shit for you....accurately? What about using MixMeister? I don't have the patience right now for this, lol.

If all the tracks are 128 bpm and their beats are 4-4 warping should be easy. Most of the times you only have to manually correct the first warp marker position and probably you won't need any more markers. Warping is fast and easy if you understand how it works. If you still have problems with it just deactivate warping, set 128 as master tempo, deactivate arranger grid and align yout tracks with the bars in live, if all the tracks are exactly at that tempo it should be very easy.

I looked at your older posts. It appears that you have Traktor. Why not use Traktor?

When it comes to warping, it should be easier the more you practice at it. Not only that, the knowledge you gain from it becomes applicable in kther situations for further understanding beat matching.

This is like some karate kid wax on wax off shit

Okay, answer me this, how do I know when a track is properly warped? When one is not properly warped?

Trying not to hold your hand completely here.. lol

1. TURN METRONOME ON
2. START WARPING BEATS TO THE METRONOME
3. PROFIT

You don't really need to warp anything, not at least if you don't care how it sounds. If you don't care, don't do it. However, if you want it tight then spend the damn time to warp it right. Most of the 128 stuff warps pretty easily 9 times out of ten if you set the global tempo right and do a "warp from here". I run into trouble sometimes with recording streaming audio which seems to occasionally shift tempo during play.

I love that.... No patience to even use a PC to help automate BPM. Certainly has never sat down without a PC and used a stopwatch and counted the beat to calculate BPMs then.

Have a gander on Youtube as there are several "fast" techniques to warp an entire track without needing to adjust much at all.
