New mac book pro : just a pain

Post by chapelier fou » Wed Jun 25, 2014 9:04 am

Damn, upgrading to a new MBP just sucks :

- shitty display (retina support come on)
- no FW (made me buy a Motu 828x)
- no DVD reader : installing Komplete is just horrible
- new power chord so the ones for my other laptops cannot be used as spare
- Price
MacBook Pro 13" Retina i7 2.8 GHz OS 10.13, L10.0.1, M4L.
MacStudio M1Max 32Go OS 12.3.1

BTW, on my older MBP, i had all my soundfiles in

myname/Library/AUDIO/Audio

but this path doesn't exist anymore. What would you advice for the livesets to spot the file automatically ? Create the same path ?

Considering the fluidity of the Live interface I don't see how the Ableton team can't fix this right now.

You found using a Thunderbolt > FW converter don't work?

Complete downloads OR cheap USB should be made available by a modern outfit like NI.

Bummer

Look at TOC (Total Ownership Cost) during the lifetime of the machine. In addition you will still get a relatively high second hand price, unlike most other machines, if you take care about it.

I know it's a pain in the arse... but there is also this option for using old power supplies...

haha, converters, converters...
I will eventually buy a Thunderbolt/FW converter, but i really not convenient. I bought the 828x also because i wanted a 10 outs soundcard, not just because of the thunderbolt port, of course. i don't even know if this matters anyway.
By the way, i can't believe how few TB audio interfaces are available... the Moutu 828x is pretty much the only one in this price. Any idea why ?

I have no idea really, but since Apple abandoned Firewire, IMHO hastily, my guess is audio interface makers are waiting for requests for thunderbolt products as well as checking how it goes for the competition.

You can download all the Komplete disc images from NI. Takes a bit of time obviously, but once you do it’s a one click process to install. No swapping discs in and out. Just put all the files on an external drive. Great for reinstalls.

I learned that the hard way. Got disc errors several discs (hours) in and when that happens you have to start from scratch. Also the box I got had 2 “J” discs and no “I” disc. I was hoping it was just a misprint but it wasn’t. So I got 8 install discs and many hours into installing to learn that I was fucked at that point. :x

I also realized that Komplete was the only reason I needed a DVD drive.

The user Library still exists, but is now hidden by default in Mavericks. To make it visible:
