Alternative to USB MIDI interface ?

Post by chapelier fou » Wed Jul 16, 2014 6:13 am

Hi there !
For my live setup, i use 2 microbrutes, mostly played in MIDI. They have no MIDI thru. Since my soundcard only has 1 MIDI out, i am using a Motu microlite to send MIDI to the appropriate synth.
I am looking for a smaller, lighter, easier way to do this, any idea ? is there for instance some hardware splitting channels into individual hardware outputs ?
thanks !!

Yes, you're right.
For some reason i don't trust them, but i'll give it a try. That might be the solution if it's 100% reliable. i wonder how it works with 2 microbrutes connected in terms of knowing which is which.

plug them in and see what's going on using Audio MIDI Setup. they should get automatically enumerated but you can also rename them.

Yeah thanks. unlike the new launchpads i am afraid you can't change their names in the hardware. i'll come back here if needed.

you should be able to rename them using Audio MIDI Setup though...

So, i was right about the computer mixing them up.
i made a test set. everything working.
Quit live, switch the 2 usbs, now the two tracks are the wrong way. Which means, there is no way to predict which is which, and i really don't want that on stage.

Just tried in the MIDI config of OSX. Still mixing them up. This has to be a sort of signature (for instance, serial number) for the computer to distinguish them.

using a dedicated MIDI interface is certainly a more reliable option. the MOTU you have is really good but you could use a smaller unit.

Wow, thanks for the link. How reliable is it ? Any problem you've ever noticed ? Works for sync as well ?
