Mobile recording/ recommendation
Any gear recommendations for the following use:
I'm looking for a portable recording device, that will allow me to load my instrumentals (via sd card) and record a rough vocal performance while on the road.

I'm not sure about what you just mentioned here. But if you want a portable recorder for the road, at low cost with good pre amps - look into Zoom products. I've experience using the Zoom H4N and the Zoom H1. And they record pretty good audio at high quality (48kHz and 24bit wav files).that will allow me to load my instrumentals (via sd card)

I'm not sure about the Zoom recorders, but I have a Tascam DR-40, which does 4-track recording. I'm pretty sure you could load a 2-track mix and then record a vocal track against it. It's possible the Zoom recorders can do the same thing.
The Tascam has been rock-solid out in the field, and the built-in mics are surprisingly good.

Yeah I found this on the Tascam site, DR-40 "A new sound source can be recorded as a separate channel while listening to a pre-recorded sound source. This is perfect for music production"- this is exactly what I'm after!sounddevisor wrote:I'm not sure about the Zoom recorders, but I have a Tascam DR-40, which does 4-track recording. Zoom doesn't state it as clear cut, although I'd be surprised if it didn't. I do like the Zoom R16 however, another great option that could serve multiple purposes down the stretch.
I'm gonna pick up the Tascam DR-40 and Zoom R16. Both will get more then there fair share of work, in and outside my set up.

Re: Mobile recording/ recommendation
i use a DR-05 and it works wonderfully.
Re: Mobile recording/ recommendation
Zoom H4N does it too. And also can be used as soundcard. One plus from other recorders is it has built in effects (reverb delay dynamics etc)cmreal04 wrote:

Here is performance test as soundcard:

Re: Mobile recording/ recommendation
I'm gonna take a look at some of those other options.
I went to my local music store yesterday and the DR-40's a lot wider than I thought it was. Some of the other models I saw were slimmer, almost allowing you to operate it with one hand, which is ideal.
I scrapped my plan to buy a zoom though...I demoed the new Akai MPK249 and was very impressed with the improvements from the original, perfect in my opinion_ so yeah I brought it home.

FYI: I ended up buying the dr-40, good buy, easy to use.
-I bought a 32 gb sd card for it and the dr-40 formats it for use.
- it hooks up to your computer via USB, so you can just drag and drop audio fils to and from.
