Handheld recorder for sampling percussive noises
Hey ya'll. Just wondering if anyone can recommend a handheld recording device with a USB connection for sampling mostly percussive noises. I'm stuck out in the woods on a very slow internet connection so any help would be greatly appreciated! My price range is up to around 600 dollars but I'll definitely entertain all recommendations.

I'm a big fan of the Tascam hard-disc recorders as general-purpose portable recording devices. I have the DR-40, which has some useful features - mic pre-amps and balanced inputs, so you can hook up real microphones; fairly decent built-in mic capsules; the ability to record 4 tracks separately; hooks up to the computer via USB for fast file transfer. Should be well under your budget - I think I paid around $200 or $250 for mine.

I have read only very good things (but never have a chance to use unfortunately) about Sony PCM-D100. Around 1000 usd. You may find 600 second hand maybe?
I have Zoom H4N.
Good XY mics with 90 & 120 degree option, 4 seperate channels 24 bit 96 khz (stereo only) plus can be used as soundcard. Around 200 usd.
For Iphone there is Rode and tascam mics.
Tascam is 20-30, Rode is 100-150 usd.

i also have a zoom h4n that is amazing!!! for 600$ though, you should just get an ipad and a bunch of apps. no internet needed. you might need a mic. or something.

also fun and affordable-the roland sp404 sx. leaves you some room for a mic. and some phones.

Thanks guys! These are some good suggestions so far. The Sony looks bad ass but it looks like the Zoom could do the trick practically as well.

Ableton 9, Feeltune Rhizome, Focusrite Pro, Mpk249....

I just recently bought the Olympus LS-14 and couldn't be happier with it. It records a great crisp sound and if I connect it using USB to my iPad with the Camera Connection Kit I can record sounds directly into Samplr using the recorder's Microphones SWEET.

I have an olympus LS-5 for this very purpose..... Could not be happier! It dosen't feel plasticky like some of the others i've tried. Functions are basic and the sound is incredible.

I went with the Olympus LS-14. Pretty excited to go out and started banging on everything in sight. Thanks everybody!

Great, have the LS-11 myself.
Get yourself one of these: Olympus LS-05/LS-10/LS-11/LS-12/LS-14 Mini Windjammer (new style)
Keeps off a lot of rumble.

I'm also a very satisfied user of the H4N.

I figured I should get one. Didn't want to pay fifty bucks for it though.chrk wrote:Great, have the LS-11 myself.
