Ableton Live + Traktor Kontrol Z1

Post by saza » Tue Nov 04, 2014 12:54 am

Hello,
i ve been looking an answer on the forum, but as I couldn t find my answer :

So I ve a (stupid) question :
Can I use ableton live with Traktor Kontrol Z1 (as a midi controller) without having the software traktor on my mac.
It would be for my dj sets in clubs.

Thanks,
saza

Yup.

Hold [Mode] and press A and B together. Now the Z1 is in 'Midi mode' The Eq knobs, faders don't eq or crossfade, they just send MIDI information. This is great because then you just map them to your Ableton devices.

BUT
the 'Master Volume' still controls the output of the audio card. = Awesome.
the 'Cue Volume' still controls the output of the headphone jack. = Awesome.

Because each individual has a different goal and style of playing a live set, the term "better" creates an ambiguity that may cause disagreement over purchase options.

I will say that I prefer -based on mobilish performance requirements- to have an audio card than a blank (requires midi mapping and those lights wont light up without a custom script) midi controller. Especially if that sound card has 2 different stereo out channels. Double especially if it even has just as many knobs and a few buttons. Yeah, get the z1.

So you wanna make up for lost buttons, what are some good (easy, cheap, reliable) workarounds? Get a midi fighter or dicers or a 25 key midi keyboard (no audio from keybaord). Assign the things you wanted to map to your laptop keyboard: trigger fx or clips can be performed this way in ableton. Traktor also allows keyboard custom mapping but there is a default mapping included. A variation of this is to get a usb computer keyboard. That way you can label the keys and wont be so worried about smashing the keys up or pushing your laptop off the stand.

I just bought Traktor Z1 (ebay) to use with Ableton 9 (I do not own or intend to use the Traktor software itself).
The device does a quick light demonstration when I plug it in (I do not have the A/C adapter but I believe the Z1 can be powered via USB) and then goes black.
I quickly found the instructions on getting it working with Live, but have not been able to get Live 9 to see it at all (either in the MIDI inputs or the orange top right corner "MIDI incoming" square).

Using the HOLD + A + B buttons Ive tried the following:
Pressing all three at once
Pressing HOLD first, then A + B
Pressing all three at once and holding for 10 seconds
etc

I'm not sure what else to do, I can't find a video of this to tell if I am missing something simple.

Things I've tried:
I downloaded the firmware update and updated the device
Looked for an Apple driver (there is none)
Tried this with multiple computers/Ableton setups
Tried multiple USB cables
Direct USB plug in (not using a port/hub)

Nothing is getting this thing to show up! Was I sold a lemon or am I missing something here?

Maybe look for a MIDI remote script?

Turns out you have to download the NI Controller Editor.
As soon as I did that it lit up and Ableton was able to see it!

Really would have been helpful if the NI instructions included that bit.

Yeah. NI isnt big on documentation for some reason. I think it's not advatageius for them to skimp on their documentation.

Glad to hear it works!
