Do they work? Or does Live only talk to newer ones?
I'm thinking of getting a second hand one.
Old Mackie Control CMU (not Pro) and Live 9
Re: Old Mackie Control CMU (not Pro) and Live 9
In case noone here owns one:
Live understands the Mackie protocol, so it can understand any control device that uses that protocol. For instance, my Yamaha Motif XF which works with Live just fine.
So the real question is whether that older unit uses the Mackie protocol or not, some early control surfaces used the HUI protocol. You should get the manual from the Mackie website and read it carefully.

Re: Old Mackie Control CMU (not Pro) and Live 9
i have one of the later ones, however there is version info and firmware upgrades for older MCUs here:
http://www.mackie.com/products/mcu/mcu_upgrade.html
and there is a handy breakdown of the MIDI messages here:
http://home.comcast.net/~robbowers11/MCMap.htm
it's true that many control surfaces support Mackie Control emulation, however most do not do it right.
