What macros have you got setup on your 128 samplers?

Post by Daniel_S » Wed Dec 17, 2014 3:45 pm

I'm interested to hear about what macro setups you have on your 128 samplers/drum racks?

Do you have all 8 macros dedicated to Sampler parameters?

Do you have some macros assigned to fx in the chain?

At the moment I have mine set to:

1 - Attack
2 - Decay
3 - Volume
4 - Cutoff
5 - Transpose
6 - Shaper
7 - Pitch Envelope
8 - Selector

Mine are pretty similar:

Attack, Sustain, Decay & Release
Transpose, Cutoff, Loop Mode and Volume.

Haven't thought of mapping pitch envelope, I will play around with it and see.

Pitch envelope is pretty cool at creating some strange sounds (zaps etc), but to be honest, I've not put it to any use in a finished track haha.

So that is one macro I will be swapping out if I see any suggestions that sound good :)

Sample Selector
Filt Type
FIlt Freq
Filt Res
Volume
Reverse
Attack
Release

I've edited the community Push mapping of Sampler, so that Volume is replaced by Pan, which means I can quickly jump down a level when working on Push to adjust any particular drum's panning.

On most conventional percussive sounds (an intial sharp transient with fading decay), I've found Decay and Sustain to be unnecessary, unless you like holding down drumpads.

EDIT - what a load of bollocks I'm talking...Decay is, in my opinion, more useful for percussion than Release - which I just leave at 5 seconds.

Tune
Attack
Decay (set to a combination of controls between filter and amp envelopes)
Tone (lp filter)
*Decimate (sample rate reducer)
*Saturate
Level
Highpass
Sample Selector

*Decimate and Saturate change depending on the sample type

They all change a little depending on the type of sound being used (e.g. Kick, Snare, Hat, Percussion, etc..)

I find that Decay to be quite useful when working with hats. Especially open hats. Automating a little movement on the decay of a hat pattern can create some very subtle variation.

Oooh mapping Reverse as a Macro, why didn't I think of that?? Will make the function much more usable...

If only Simpler also had a Reverse function, my drum rack work would be sped up...bah.

What mapping might that be, if I may ask?

It is just an edited text file (devices.py) to vastly improve Ableton's frankly shit coverage of Ableton's devices on Push. You may have noticed that many devices have many of their parameters missing and the present ones displayed in half-assed banks etc. This fixes all of that for all of Live's instruments and effects:

viewtopic.php?f=55&t=198946&p=1562395#p1562395

Installation is very simple. If any particular mapping does not suit you, it's very easy to edit.
