EQ8 spectrum analyzer causing 30% CPU spikes when activated?

I've been pulling my hair out trying to figure out why exactly I can't play a project that has every single channel frozen or bounced to audio. It's because of EQ8. If I turn off the analyzer on just one instance, my Activity Monitor CPU usage drops 30% Is this normal?

I'd say abnormal. I have a slow machine and doing that gives me 5% tops.
