Just stumbled across this amazing video. I am not even sure if this guitarist has a MIDI pickup on his guitar.

Can anyone understand and explain how a guitar without a MIDI pickup (or maybe it has one) is able to produce these type of sounds. He explains all the gear in setup but I am still confused. I understand he uses a MIDI pedal switcher, but I am still missing a very basic concept as to how the guitar is "tracking" all the amazing MIDI sounds so perfectly unless there is a hex pickup on guitar which I didn't see it in the video. Goes to show you there is no "right" way to record and experimentation may be the most fun you can have. My concern is I am still in the buying process and do not even have a small bedroom tube amp yet. I want to make sure I only purchase gear that will be used frequently, not something bought on an "impulse" purchase.

He is not using the guitar to trigger midi instruments. The synths you hear are programmed beforehand. He uses Ableton's effects to process the regular guitar signal to make it synth like but it is still just audio.

I like it (being a guitarist) but it is pretty standard stuff.

I can see someone who ist turning lots of knobs and pushing lots of buttons, but I can't see someone, and I can't here someone, who is playing guitar - his guitar playing looks like staffage.

Not sure about the "staffage" but I agree with the rest of what you say. OP should check out Adrian Belew for this kind of stuff.

'staffage' means 'just for show reasons'.
