Get your ears out and try'em on these quick mixes!

Post by Steve Glen » Sun Mar 29, 2015 7:17 am

Hey y'all. Testing some new stuff. These two recordings are identical in arrangement, but they differ in mix decisions.

Which do you prefer? Which will translate better to club/big stage/earbuds/ghetto blaster?

I'm not going to tell you what I did, but you're welcome to guess...if you can hear a difference.

Hard to tell a real definitive difference between the two honestly, at least on my Shure cans. It sounds to me like 1.00000002 has a wider lead sound than 1.00000003? Sounds like you are trying to find the tree when you need to just look at the forest, imo.

As for translation it seems like not much in the track is panned dead center, even the bassier sound has a lot of stereo movement on it which sounds neat on cans but will probably get lost in a club/car, etc.

I would pick your main elements and have those dead center with your main drums and then build the track around those elements spatially. This pretty much guarantees that those pieces will come through regardless of the system.

Also not sure if this was by design but your snare is totally lost it sounds like.

Yeah you're right about the width- it's crazy wide. And Dave, I think you're right about all the other stuff too.

I purchased a new plugin that I was trying out. The use of the plugin is the only difference between the examples. The plug's sole job is to make the different tracks mix better together (for a cleaner master).

If you were to guess, which example has this plugin [ON]?
