What are some typical Ableton noob/newbie questions?

Post by iamcluster12 » Mon May 04, 2015 1:22 pm

I am looking at shooting some tutorials and had the idea of doing some on the typical noob/newbie questions that everyone comes across when first starting out with Ableton Live.

So I would love to hear if anyone has any classic questions?

Hope to hear from you :)

No one needs more noob tutorials. There are billions on youtube already. Try to do some of the more advanced stuff that can not just as well be learned by simply reading TFM ....

Thanks for the response, not really the answer I was looking for but still keen to hear if anybody has some examples of typical problems people come across when first using Live :)

I guess some of the questions I can think of aren't really noob questions but more Live philosophical questions.

1. What are common uses of the Session View?

2. How does the Session View and Arrange View interact with each other?

3. Explain the process of Warping a Song. (describe a simple case and a difficult one)

4. How do I set up my Midi Keyboard and make use of the knobs for specific VSTs and such?

5. How do I get swing to my tracks?

6. What is Beat Repeat and how does it work?

7. Live Racks 101.

8. Common Keyboard shortcuts and useful ones to assign on your own.

9. What are some of the cool devices for Max 4 Live.

10. How does Session View work?

1. Why do my samples sound different in Live?

2. How do I get out of full-screen mode?

3. Why isn't there a way to see how long a song is? (there is)

4. What is warping and why do I need to do it?

5. Where do I store my own presets?

6. Why can't I preview sounds in the browser?

That said, there ARE 800 billion beginner tutorials for Live already.

1. My favorite producer/performer has Live on their screen in this YouTube video. That’s why I bought it. What are they doing?

2. Why aren’t my tracks as loud as the tracks I bought on iTunes?

3. Why can’t Live do this like XYZ DAW?

4. Why does M4L crash my set and reboot my computer 90% of the time?

5. I just added Push, Maschine, and a Launchpad to my setup. Help!!!

6. Live keeps stuttering and crashing on my 2002 Compaq and I can’t afford a new computer. Should I buy more RAM?

7. Will this brand new $3,500 Mac be good enough to produce music with Live?

How do I get 0-100% wet from effects on Return tracks using the Send knob?

It came up within a couple days of playing with Live. Years later, I still don't know whether or not this is possible. Just knowing that it can't be done would save me all kinds of time. Would have saved...

And actually just an overview of bussing and routing is probably one of those foundational topics.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone! Just thought I would post this link here as I have started uploading videos to this video series which I focus on the common issues we all come across during the early stages of using Live, all of which I have come across myself. No messing around, quick and straight to the point. Don't forget to subscribe to stay up to date. Videos will be uploaded on a regular basis, I have a lot more in the works and I am open to any tutorial suggestions, just hit me up :)

Cool... I just want to go on record as saying that the questions that jlgrimes posted would be some really good ones to drill down on IMHO
