This is the OP of this thread. Just wanted to give you guys an update on what I ended up buying for making music and to run Ableton Live:

Apple 2009-2010 Mac Pro (64 bit)
5,1; 2.66 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon Processor (upgradable to 12-core and 3.4 GHz)
16 GB RAM 1333 MHz DDR3 (RAM upgradable to 64 GB)
Currently running Mavericks (10.9.4)

Mac Pro works like a dream and is blazingly fast as well. Bought it off of Craigslist here in Los Angeles, CA.

Thanks for all of your input and suggestions. :)

If I could ask you guys just one more question I should be good to go with Live. After downloading, unzipping, and installing all of my third party vst plugins, how do you tell Ableton where to find the third party vst plugins? On a Mac, they 'magically' show up within Live  ; however, it seems to be different on a PC. It's as if Live needs me to tell it where to find the third party plugins...something I do not know how to do even after hitting the 'rescan' button in Live's Preferences. Any suggestions???

Thanks again.
hi
under options, perferences
then file folder tab and you'll need to look at the plug-in sources
set the folder then scan if it doesn't scan by itself
