The issue I'm talking about only happens when the drive is unlocked. It's more like 2 times out of how many times these computers have been rebooted during that time period. Maybe 2 / 2000 ?

Any experiences with Live + encrypted disc or thoughts about the importance of encryption?

despite my earlier misgivings i have been using FileVault2 for over a year now, as whole-disk encryption is a good way of safeguarding your data, even if your machine is stolen. no issues so far, it has been very robust. even a handful of kernel panics and hard resets have not caused any issues.

i still would not use it on a machine dedicated to live performance though...

Yes, makes sense to not use on a live performance machine. Do you know what caused the kernel panics? In 12 years of using Macs I've never had one. The thought of it makes my kernel panic.

kernel panics are usually caused by hardware faults or buggy software with low-level system hooks (e.g. device drivers).

i have had a cursory look but am not sure what has been causing them recently. i suspect it is some software i have installed. usually i am quite cautious about installing extra software, but i haven't been using my machine for live work this year, so have been a bit more loose with installing things...
