pretty easy to check. resample the audio with and without the spectrum device. do the two resamples null cancel each other?

I agree with you--I've always detected a tiny bit of high-end boost or transients whenever I use most spectrum analyzers. Although, I've read somewhere recently (I think it was "Mixing Secrets for the Small Studio" by Mike Senior") that most plugins include a built-in limiter in the code and that it's necessary to be aware of the effect of this when you're mixing.

The test fishmonkey describes would certainly reveal the truth of the matter. I may have to set up a test project with some of my favorite meters and analyzers and see what's going on.

Plugins like spectrum analyzers could detect the rendering process from the host and go into bypass mode when rendering.

this is the weirdest thing i heard all day :D , analyzers are "readers" of code, they dont put anything back or process into the signal, how can one change sound ?

Think of quantum physics! :D The instrument used to make measurements always has some impact on the thing being measured. In the analog world, even a VU meter, because of its magnetic coil, would have some small (probably imperceptible) influence on the signal. And what about the amplifier circuit that drives the meter?

Is there code in the spectrum analyzer that simulates gain in order to provide a more sensitive display? Is that gain then eliminated by code that works as a limiter? Even 32-bit floating point drops or approximates numerous decimal places in the calculations, and every plugin is going to run its own series of calculations on every data sample... introducing a (hopefully) undetectable shift in the reproduced waveform. It's just math! 8)

Okay, now I'm really excited to run those tests.... If they are particularly interesting, I'll post them here. I must have four or five spectrum analyzers in my plugins folder.

Don't you mean 'hear' the results? I'm thinking reminiscent of John Cage?

(1) make a sound and record it.
(2) duplicate it.
(3) phase reverse the second one. Sound cancels out perfectly.
(4) slap spectrum analyser on one

Sound still cancels percectly.

Therefore spectrum has no effect on the audio.
