Recurring Kernel Panics

Post by asteinchester » Thu Jul 02, 2015 12:08 am

Perhaps I should have posted sooner, but I've come to my wit's end.

I'm using a late 2013 Macbook Pro with 2.3 ghz i7, 16 GB ram, Intel Iris Pro Graphics, on 10.9.5. My audio interface is a Duet2, and I'm running Live 9.1.

I use Ableton primarily for scoring movies with an external monitor hooked up and despite all efforts, I keep getting kernel panics. Here's what I've done:

-clean install to Yosemite *crash*
-clean instal back to Mavericks *crash*
-ran everything without the external monitor, just fine
-external monitor hooked up through thunderbolt and HDMI *crash*
-had the logic board replaced with all new ports on both sides of my macbook *crash*

Has anyone else had this problem? Is there something I'm missing that I should try?

the kernel panic reports will be a big clue about what causing the crashes (use the Console app in /Applications/Utilities).

kernel panics are generally caused by hardware issues or low-level driver issues.

What he said, usually it's a hardware issue that causes this. An HD going bad, loose USB cable, display crapping out, etc.

Yes well, as mentioned, I have an all new logic board and all new ports. Hard drive was tested and is fine, display is brand new. What other hardware could be causing this? My external usb hub?

And I've seen the reports in the console but I mean I'm just a dude, have no idea how to translate pages and pages of computer jargon. Something specific I should be looking for? Would post if necessary. Believe me, I've got report after report after report.

how frequent are your kernel panics?

have you done a methodical test, removing all devices and adding them back to your system one by one?
