Converting aftertouch to mod wheel

Post by zerocrossing » Wed Dec 31, 2008 3:42 am

Hello gang,

More often than not I find myself changing mod wheel to aftertouch in most of my patches. It's just feels more natural to use aftertouch to me. Maybe because I'm coming from years of guitar. Anyway, does anyone know of a way to map aftertouch to mod wheel to save me some time?

i have no idea but i would like to do the same but with pitch

i guess no instrument gives you as much control as guitar does.
The Push / Novation Launch Pad / Novation Launch Pad Pro / Novation Launch Key
/ Launch Control XL / Machine MkII / Machine Studio / BeatStep / Livid OhmRGB / Livid Code V2 / Apc 40 MKII

no computers or synths

i guess you cant do this already with pitch.

anyways
wouldn't you just map what ever is assigned to your mod wheel to the after touch control?

what OS are you on? don't think its possible in Live by itself, you might be able to do this on your controller. Only problem is that Mod wheel is a MIDI CC and Aftertouch is a bit more than a CC. Some kind of MIDI translation doo-hickey will do it for you...like Bomes, MIDI Pipe, or Bidule.

Because it would be easier to be able to set up some sort of converter midi effect once than to change it every time I use a preset.

You can set this up quite easily using PD

Here are a couple of PD patches I wrote (or drew?) for converting Channel After Touch into Controller messages. - You'll need MIDIYoke or equivalent to route MIDI between PD and Live.

This is the one I use most of the time:

This one is more configurable and the test button is useful when setting up a MIDI mapping in Live. (assigning AT using MIDI learn is tricky because you can't send AT without first sending a Note On - could this be why Ableton have not implemented After Touch ???)

Hm, I was hoping for a more elegant solution. I've never even heard of PD, but perhaps if I can't find another solution I'll take a hard look at it

To answer other people as to why I'd need it, I just purchased a VST (Alchemy) that doesn't respond to Afterouch, but does respond to MOD wheel.

Open up your midi controller and put the wires from the AT kb sensors onto the mod wheels wires. Voila!

For info - PD is short for Pure Data and it's a freeware program that works a lot like MAX/MSP.

Thanks! I gathered it was something like that. I'll have a look at it the next chance I get.

just to report, i wanted to do the same thing and have happily achieved it with Bomes midi translator. Really brings the instrument to life to be able to use the aftertouch of the push in a meaningful way, in this case with wallander's wivi virtual wind instruments . The trumpet is awesome!
