PDC isn't working for Group track and Rack

Post by pencilrocket » Tue Dec 08, 2015 4:31 pm

There is 3 instruments. I want to play same notes for them and use tempo-synced plugin for merged sound.
3 practical ways to get same result.

(1) Using Instrument rack
Easiest method. One midi clip to play all insts. Least FX needed.

(2) Using Group Track
Second easiest. Need to duplicate midi clips for other 2 tracks. Least FX needed.

(3) Using 3 tracks
Need to duplicate midi clips and FX for other 2 tracks.

*(4) Route MIDI from one track to 3 instrument tracks.
You can't freeze easily so no one will use this.

1 and 2 options aren't delay compensated.

Image
1st waveform (Expected result) is without latency plugin . 2nd is option (1), 3rd is (2), 4th is (3).
Tempo-synced FX is supposed to do ducking first beat, so waveform amplitude should look like first one..

It seems that we should just stick to method (3) to get best result whenever we use Live. :?

[Update]

(5) Routing 3 instruments output audio to a single Audio track.
If you route 3 instruments audio to one track and use tempo-synced plugin for the merged sound, you can reduce the FX as well as Group track. In this way, PDC is working unlike Group track.

Thanks for sharing this interesting problem.

Personally I'd use a combination of 3 and 4. Starting out with 4 for recording the performance. When needing to freeze simply record to all tracks or drag and drop. If you're fast at selecting the latter would be quickest.

How are Instruments Racks not delay compensated? I use Group tracks and MIDI to multiple other tracks with External Instrument and other layered instruments for my drums and I think I would have noticed any plug-ins not getting compensated as I have loads of processing on these.

Are you referring to tempo-synced automation only?

Could you describe your rack in more detail, maybe in a fashion so I could reproduce it?
Make some music!

It was about VST that is syncing to the tempo(timing) of Live. It listens to Live's timing and alter the audio stream accordingly. e.g. ducking, gating, etc.

Track insert is like this.
-> [Inst rack] - [Tempo-synced VST] -> (Sound)

Inside the rack.
Synth A - EQ - Utility - Comp
Synth B - EQ
Synth C - EQ - Comp
Personally I'd use a combination of 3 and 4
Yes, I think they are wise choices to work in Live to avoid timing issue annoyance.
