OS X Live assertion failed libxpc.dylib Flooding breach

Post by XyBerBoT » Mon Jan 04, 2016 1:30 am

Calling all Ableton Live MAC OS X El Capitan users who are experiencing unsolved flooding on their console with the following message or similar:

1/3/16 4:12:00.762 PM Live[771]: assertion failed: XXXXX: libxpc.dylib + XXXXX [XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX]: XxXX

You must have correctly installed The Latest Live, Max, And Java packages and those three must be running with no problems.

I noticed my system behaving erratically so I opened the console and I noticed weird system responses. Before I could investigate further or keep monitoring the output, the console started getting flooded with the above-mentioned message. There is possible increase of battery usage, memory leaks and I am also considering networking issues since I noticed an exception was added to my firewall from the MAX application, which uses Java. This may be part of the functionality, but I'm still considering networking as a probable cause for this problem.

Disconnecting the internet, resetting Live settings, disabling plugins, reinstalling and reauthorizing, disabling wifi and internet access, disconnecting peripheral devices, resetting NVRAM and repairing disk permissions doesn't help. We are starting to investigate this problem in depth. Please try these things before posting.

Just opening the program, letting it sit there, and waiting for about ten minutes triggers this problem without adding tracks, sounds, or devices, or even touching the Live application.

I have sent a message to Ableton about this problem and we are currently working on this issue, but I would like anyone who is experiencing the same problem to post here so that we can help Ableton find a solution. My friends from Ableton mentioned they haven't had that many user reports on this problem so I thought I'd help by posting to see how many people are having this issue and find as much information for them to use. The following forum posts are related to this problem:

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=217381&p=1680976#p1680976

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6822693

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=217747&p=1676149&hi ... b#p1676149

The only user-provided solution so far is a complete MAC OS X system reinstall, which is out of the question for most of us who have hundreds of gigabytes in sounds saved into our hard drives and reinstalling would take too much time, when this problem could be solved instead if we all help.

Thanks very much in advance.

OK, I have this problem on my El Capitan AND Yosemite machines, so it's not El Capitan specific.

Hypothesis: it's a 3rd party program interacting badly with Ableton, which would explain why some users have it and many don't.

Suggestion: we should all compare list of third party things and see what we can find.

On the apple support lists they do this using Etrecheck - http://etresoft.com/etrecheck - which is a convenient open source program to generate system reports to facilitate just this kind of comparison....

So let's make like they do on the apple support lists and see what weird 3rd party extensions we have in common.

Code: Select all

EtreCheck version: 2.6.6 (226)
Report generated 07/01/16 11:42
Runtime 2:47
Download EtreCheck from http://etrecheck.com

yep, i have the same issue with Live 9.5, OS X 10.10.5, latest Max and Java installed. have been in touch with Ableton Support about it, but no solution yet.

Yes, so if only one or two more of us spend the 5 minutes doing the Etrecheck thing we could likely narrow down the causes to the "unusual stuff" that we have in common.

Looking at the Etrecheck output I posted above, for example, below is a bunch of stuff that many Ableton Live users don't have that I do, and any one of these could be a a cause.

So, maybe if you're too busy or too lazy to do a really rigorous test with Etrecheck, you could simply mention which things on this list you also run?

Re: OS X Live assertion failed libxpc.dylib Flooding breach

Post by witchbutter » Fri Jan 08, 2016 11:19 pm

I'm having the same problem. It's preventing me from finishing a track which is really frustrating. I did try kicking my Kontakt track out of the song which dramatically reduced CPU, but doesn't stop the errors. My post is here viewtopic.php?f=1&t=219580&p=1687633#p1687633

Here's hoping there is a way without a reinstall, that takes me like a week and a half.

Adding my EtreCheck. At first glance the only common extensions I see is the iLok (Pace anti piracy)

Code: Select all

Pace/ilok stuff is required for MaxMSP, so I guess we all have that. And we don't have many other things in common...
...except for Native Instruments. What versions of that are we running, I wonder? Mine is old, Komplete 6.

According to NI ServiceCenter, I have

Code: Select all

Absynth 5.2.1.1307
Battery 3.2.3.637
FM8 1.3.2.1362
Massive 1.4.0.292
Reaktor 5.9.2.1074
Kontakt 4.2.4.5316
In addition to that I have the following plugins

Code: Select all

Izotope RX 3
Melodyne editor 2.1.2
Izotope Nectar 1
Sonic Charge Echobode 1.0.0
SonicCharge Microtonic 3.1.1
SonicCharce Synplant 1.2.2
Renoise Redux 1.0.1

And while I was checking that I found some extra plugins in the system folder I didn't know anything about, which I've just deleted

Code: Select all

Sinevibes Multitide 1.0.2
SmartMusicSoftSynth
I completely rebuilt this machine from backup and the problem STILL occurred, so it's presumably something I have installed as opposed to filesystem corruption or what-have-you. Maybe there are a couple of different programs that trigger the issue? Or a particular corrupt plug-in...?

I'll report if deleting the two weird plugins has changed anything.

the issue is intermittent here.

Abes support haven't been able to track down the issue yet but they did say that maybe creating a new user account stops the problem, however i haven't had time to test that yet. if that is true then that will help to narrow down the cause or causes...

If I create a new user account, what happens exactly to my third party licenses like NI Komplete? Is it like register a new computer?

These are to the best of my knowledge not compatible with El Capitan. It wasn't until updates this autumn before NI declared newer compatible versions were available. Why would you think you could use older versions without issues?

I'm not saying this particular problem of yours must be about this though. You still need an update if you're going to use El Capitan or live with the situation that do stem from this. I'm not sure what the issues might be. Maybe you already know what these might be and you know you can work or get around them.

New user account where? If you mean at Ableton, that will not affect third party licenses that aren't directly connected to the Ableton account. NI isn't. Any packs and Live licenses can be transfered in most cases I'd think between Ableton accounts.

If you mean in your OS, then this will wary with the licensing. Not all software needs to be deactivated or decoupled. Ableton rely on a limited number of installations, but I think they are per computer if I'm not mistaken. Hopefully NI is too.

In some cases, just transfering preferences and/or settings will be enough, but this is different per maker.

My issue is either caused by Izotope Ozone 7 VST, Izotope RX5 VST or by iLok. I took some time to do a process of elimination.

Yeah, I was confusing things. I was mainly scared that a new installation will put me in trouble with my NI account. And as a matter of fact my NI Library is now a little messed up. User libraries and other stuff... But I'll get it sorted...

iLok can be quite confusing. We have a ghost account in the license manager named just like an existing machine, so can't remove the license from that. For some reason iLok thinks the same machine are 2 different ones. I'm very happy Waves abandoned iLok as I think their own system is much better. at leafs I haven't had any issues with it, though Waves Central has GUI issues on my machine. Easily overcome.

I'm sure Izotope support can help you. I hope it works out for you. Keep us posted.
