What OS? What hardware including the audio interface?Popsicle Theory wrote:Last week I finally upgraded to 9.6 and since then my CPU has been INSANE
I'm on OS X "El Capitan" 10.1.3 on a Core2Duo with an RME Babyface and the 64bit version of 9.6 is the most efficient ever for me. So my experience is the opposite of yours.
I have currently no reason to think the 32bit version would be different as the performance in OS X have been identical since Live 9.1 at least. I have no 32bit plug-ins as I abandoned or updated them. Jbridge (VST) and 32lives (AU) may work out, but it's not worth it to me.
Having plug-ins installed doesn't affect anything really. It could be a few of your plug-ins are not compatible when in use inside an Ableton live set.

Re: Insane CPU (since upgrade 9.6)
Yeah, You know I have noticed a bizarre uptick in CPU use percentage since the upgrade to 9.6! (I have not upgraded to El Capitan yet, I still have Yosemite on my Mac.) Anyway I have 16 GB of ram and opened up a fresh Set in Live and then opened just one Plugin! (Steinberg Groove Agent) CPU use immediately went to 75% !!! It didn't used to do that!
I also have Windows 10, on an 8 core AMD ... I'll have to check there to see if there is a difference.

Do anyone of you have either Melodyne or Elektron Overbridge beta installed? I forgot the details but there were some issues with those.

Re: Insane CPU (since upgrade 9.6)
a bridge works, but it's kind of a hack and not as good (and sometimes reliable) as using a native version. definitely something to file in the "workaround" section.Popsicle Theory wrote:I use the 32 bit version and have a lot of third party plugins (+-50) installed. Would it be wise to install the 64 bit version? I read that 32 plugins do not work with the 64 bit version of Ableton Live but that you can download a bridge so that they do work..
the trouble with 32 bit plugins at this point is that they are end of life. i cannot imagine that you will even be able to purchase a 32 bit OS much longer. DAWs will most likely stop being created in 32 bit versions as a result. think about it, what's the point? so you will be forced to migrate eventually. it might be time to start looking into upgrade options for your plugins or moving to newer plugins and versions so that this isn't forced upon you all at once - it's getting to that point.

Re: Insane CPU (since upgrade 9.6)
I actually made an observation of one of my plug-ins using a lot of CPU, that it didn't before, the Waves Aphex Exciter in either 9.6 or 9.6.1b2. So far that's the only one.
I wonder if the efforts to improve CPU usage in 9.6.1 means some processors — think older like mine — will be less than stellar compared to others (more modern). I hope not.

Re: Insane CPU (since upgrade 9.6)
I've had this, also running 32bit version on my pc, couldn't find the cause at all.
Tried deleting all the tracks one by one, some times this sorted it but others not so. Rebooting the pc seemed to fix it here, started to worry my pc may be on its way out but haven't had the issue since...
Certainly pretty weird to see cpu usage showing 1000% and having no audio playback yet only using a a couple of drum racks and a few live effects?!
Not noticed it on my mac yet but then I haven't done much music on it since I've had 9.6 installed.

Re: Insane CPU (since upgrade 9.6)
Ive had the same cpu problem, after going from live 9.2 to 9.5, and now 9.6.
Ive bought an new audiointerface, ( a cheap but great sounding, Steinbergs UR12 ) did the most annoying thing, a total and clean reboot, of my computer. Now everything works perfect
If it was the old interface ( Propelleheads Balance ) or crap in my computer, i really dont know, but problem solved :)

Hey mate, I've got Melodyne 4 installed - I haven't come across anything crazy with that and 9.6 (Mac running El Capitan).Stromkraft wrote:Do anyone of you have either Melodyne or Elektron Overbridge beta installed? I forgot the details but there were some issues with those.

Yeah... I just started a new project with 9.6. Got 3 short audio loops going then opened up a synth and snap crackle pop city. FIX THE BLOODY THING ABELTON!

Which synth and did you ask for support? What's your audio interface?murgatroid wrote:Yeah... I just started a new project with 9.6. Got 3 short audio loops going then opened up a synth and snap crackle pop city. FIX THE BLOODY THING ABELTON!
Also, are you certain this is due to insane CPU usage? That is, have you observed the Live load and/or activity monitor?
I reported odd issue involving seconds long audio dropouts yesterday, that seemed to indicate load spikes at certain parts, that minutes later played back properly.
In my set of today, nothing like that.
