Dithering in Ozone 7

Post by johnnyburke » Sat Mar 26, 2016 12:18 am

If I am recording in 24 bit and don't plan on making a CD,just want to post WAV files on Soundcloud, etc. do I need to dither?

Thanks in advance!

If everything you're doing is 24bit start to finish, then no you probably don't need to dither.

Isn't that Ozone uses 64-bit depth internally during calculation, so in theory every time you dump an audio you should dither?

Taken from "Dithering in Ozone" guide:
"... This precision is one of several reasons that Ozone can take a lot of CPU, and uses 64-bit calculations internally."

Usually the apps handle anything needed in regardless to their internal processing for you, the end user doesn't have to do anything. I've seen arguments for and against dithering everytime you change the bit depth no matter what it is. But I think (personally) for anything over 16bit it's probably unneccesary. If Ozone has a 24bit dither option, it's not going to hurt anything using it either. We're talking absolutely tiny, minimal changes to the file with dither.
