Hi there,

I'm considering purchasing an H9. I plan to use it both with and without a computer. Does any one of you have any opinions on the following points?

- using it as a "plugin" inside Ableton Live via MIDI control.
- using it in a hardware setting to process sound (not guitar)
- using its pitchshifting algorithms for vocals (it is a guitar processor and I have heard that its pitchshifters don't work well with voice)
- controlling it with MIDI and/or the dedicated iPad app during performance.

Thank you.

- it's definitely possible to use it as plugin. midi on the H9 is very flexible and every parameter can be assigned to whatever CC. but i personally think the setup time for such a configuration is a PITA and the great sound quality of the eventide algos goes down the drain if you chase the sound back and forth through converters. also saving the preset for every corresponding session will be an annoyance, etc. you're better off using actual plugins. there's a plethora of them for all kinds of exotic FX.

-yes, but be careful with the levels. it officially only supports guitar levels, while the ...factor pedals take both guitar and line levels. this was probably a business decision from eventide so they don't ruin the market for their expensive rack fx units. experience has shown that the H9 takes hotter levels then guitar as well but if that is how you want to use it you should try before you buy.

-that's a question of personal taste. just try it and see if the result is what you expected.

-midi for sure. the ipad app is also very reliable, but it works over bluetooth. i never had any dropouts so far but i don't know if i would use the app for live performance. you'll probably be fine. but the H9 also has the dedicated hotknob that you can assign any combination of parameters to and access it right on the unit. it is a really powerful performance feature.

Thank you Rixende.

I would not route the output of the pedal back into the audio interface, but would send it to an external mixer.

The pitchshifter performance is not really a matter of personal taste as formants play a big role when it comes to pitchshifting the human voice. The guitar level issue can also be problematic, I guess.

Hi there!
I created a tutorial on how to control the H9 with a external midi controller (Arturia Beatstep) with the help of Ableton Live, H9_remote (a max4live device by Daniel Collins) and Control Surface Studio (for creating a custom remote script).
With the tutorial we’ll SEE always the 10 knob values of the current preset in the pedal, and SEND RELATIVE midi info in order to have smoothy changes in that values. Also we will have the ability to fast change to the desired presets with only pressing pads, and automatically send again relative midi info to the new values. Here is the link:

This is brilliant. Thanks so much for creating this for H9 users.
