two people working on the same project on two computers

Post by aratunes » Fri Apr 22, 2016 1:50 am

Is it possible? Splice, link?

Two students on Macs with two Pushes working in the same set, clips that one makes appear on the other computer. They can jam together, edit any clips, etc.

Ah, maybe I can just hook up two mice/keyboards into one computer, assign the Pushes and achieve the same thing.

DO you have a suggestion? Thanks Ara

Sounds like great fun! I'm just trying out Splice, and from what I can see this kind of real-time collaboration is not possible.
One of you needs to save the project, sync to Splice, and then the other can download the synced version and continue working on it.
That's my understanding of it.

Here's what we do when jamming in the studio:
  • We sync via MIDI. I suppose Link would work
  • The first party manages source audio files and freezes tracks with plug-ins and protected samples the second party doesn't have
  • Only the one project "A" is shared to Splice by the first party
  • The second party keeps project "A" local and
  • Syncs to Splice and downloads the project and then
  • Opens the Splice project "A"
  • Adds tracks and clips from the local project "A" via the Live browser and
  • Manages files, freezes tracks with plug-ins and protected samples the first party doesn't have
  • Sets up a rough mix
  • Saves the Splice project which uploads this new merged version
  • The first party automatically gets the changes via Splice on his computer
It can be messy but works. Unfortunately this is the best way I've found. You can forego Splice if you're in the same place all the time but Splice also saves all previous versions of the project.

So what happens if both works on this project away from each other? Then you have 2 deviating versions which is if course messy. Be organized and communicate I guess.

use Link and merge the projects at the end of the session.
