What's your flavour?

Post by noisetonepause » Wed Jan 08, 2003 8:15 pm

Hello, world...

Some bored bloke over at the propellerheads.se message board posted a question, which ended up in the old 'what's your dream setup?' discussion... It's quite funny to read what people think, so here's my post from over there - and I know I'd like to read similar posts from you:

"Give me one of 'em new 12" macs running OSX.2 (the others are too big) - and let's imagine it has an audio input. Slap a dbx MiniPre on that, with a nice an rugged Shure SM58 mic (or maybe an AKG condenser, for recording the essential acoustic guitar :)). Now, use Reaktor 3.3 as a loop recorder, mangler and effecter thing. Then sequence and manipulate the loops live with Live2 (and a Spin doctor, an Oxy8 and maybe one of the fader-equipped Control Freaks), and run the whole shebang through the EMI 2/6, with two channels going into either a Roland DJ1000 or a Korg KAOSS mixer (both have built in effects) and bounced, post-effects and crossfader, back into Live with the EMI. Last stereo out is for the Sennheisers... there you have it, a perfect setup.
Maybe there'd be room for the FM7... luvly... and, naturally, the TCNative plugins for compression and reverbs...
Maybe for studioish work you'd have a Fat 2 valve compressor/front end for recording and dirtying up stuff, and something JoeMeek for stereo work.

I wouldn't want much more than this. Maybe a DX7 or something, if I my keyboard skills were better.

And hey! Compare this to my setup:
iBook 700
Behringer 12 channel desk & Monacor DJ-mixer
AKG C2000B and crappy Stageline dynamic mic
EMI 2/6
Oxygene8
Reaktor & Live
TC Plug-ins
... and an incredibly sweet sounding, Korean steel string acoustic...

So I'm a very happy bunny!"

And also, I'm a bit curious to what you all are listening to... I'm divided between two CDs (well, four...) at the moment: Bruce Springsteen's Live 75-85 three CD set and last year's album of the year (and most other years, for that matter), the Streets' Original Pirate Material.
Suit #1: I mean, have you got any insight as to why a bright boy like this would jeopardize the lives of millions?
Suit #2: No, sir, he says he does this sort of thing for fun.

You REALLY don't want to know my dream setup. In fact, in my seach of it, my gear has goten so unmanageable that it's a nightmare. I'm even thinking of making a Visio diagram so I can understand it.

The following is all dedicated to audio:

Computers:

Amiga 500
Home-built Athlon 850
Home-built P3 1.3Ghz
IBM Thinkpad 366
IBM Thinkpad 1.6Ghz
I'm also working on doing something with audio and a Sun Ultra 1 I got for $20 at an auction.

Synths:

Korg EA-1
Korg ER-1
microKORG
Half a dozen circuit bent Realistic, Casio, and other keyboards

Midi Controllers:

Oxygen 8
Evolution 249C
Keyfax Phatboy

Software:

Cubase SX
Ableton Live
Fruityloops 3.5x
Reason 2
Soundforge
Traktor
Misc Amiga Trackers
ARTS (KDE Synth)

Other:

Dr. Sample 202
About a dozen stomp box effects
Zoom Bass Processor
Zoom Amp Sim
Alesis Studio 12r mixer
Numark 1002X DJ Mixer

Instruments:

Ibanez RG-440
Jackson Bass (model? can't remember. love it tho)
1970's Epiphone guitar (model? it's pretty generic. I've never seen another like it though)
Fender Acoustic (unknown model, had it since I was 5)
G. Edward Lutherie 4 string upright bass

I'm sure I've missed a lot, and the other half of geargasm has a similar list, plus some tech 12's. I've really been trying to brainstorm on getting peices and parts together to be able to do something live, but I've had a really hard time figuring out what.

Ideally, I'd like to get a phat tibook (flamers and trolls will be forced to lug all this stuff next time I play out) and something like an MOTU 828 to consolidate a lot of this crap, but I'm really going to think before I acquire something again.

If you're interested, there's pics of some of our gear at geargasm.com. Rob's also got some interesting stuff like a Didgeridoo and a Banjo he can play pretty well.
I am the bumpitron.

current setup:
tibook 400
live
muzys
pluggo (yay! just got it!)
max/msp (yay! just got it too! no idea what i'm doing yet!)
absynth
coupla freewares
tascam us-224
evolution uc-16
oxygen 8
little behringer mixer
rode nt1
sony dj-something-or-other headphones

dream performance setup (rough estimate):
two 12"ers (modified w/l3 cache) w/no external sound cards running live/pluggo and max/msp on each running into a-
a nice old little soundcraft desk (with one of the two tibook channel faders flipped upside down for easy crossfades between them) with sends to-
a kaoss 2
a korg es-1
back to the line in's on the 15's (yay! steve put them back on!)
a sherman filterbank
and plenty of knobs/buttons/sliders/joysticks on my two slickafied custom midi controlers.

add this to the rest waiting for me in the studio:
a machinedrum
some ns10m's
a mid-level pa system (gosta be checkin the levels before the gig yo)
five metric tons of old, glitchy, noisy, broken, fucked up, abused, analog/digital bit's of kit.

i've been listening to a bootleg 2 hour funkstorung gig, cex, the first song on the new squarepusher and his live set, b.o.c., anything beefcake and all the live electronic gigs i can get my grubby little mits on.

In the near future I see following additions coming quite quickly [try to make my dreamstudio affordable+portable  ] :

Adding a notebook optimized for audio -

Gameboys with nanoloop/lsdj Nord MicroModular,Shure sm-58 all purpose mike -> all hooked up to maybe an rme hammerfall as food for Live

Tannoy Reveal Active monitors

Custom built 64 knob midi-controller(s)

Small but powerfull ... would satisfy all my needs ...

i've pretty much got my dream setup...

ableton 2

computer running winXP (it's only a pentium 2, something a little faster would be nice)

a handful of free VST FX

2 hard drives (one just for audio)

really nice keyboard and trackball mouse (extremely important to me)

2 oxygen 8's (i have an intellimouse, and i have a custom button on it assigned to the keystroke "Ctrl+M". this way i can assign new midi configs really fast.)

audiosport quattro (would be nice to have a PCI soundcard, cos USB crashes about once per 3 hours on my old pentium 2)

i've kind of gotten to the point where the newest. shiniest, fanciest gear isn't really inspiring to me anymore, i'd rather just have something simple that works and does what it claims to do.
