sync 2 MBPs
sync 2 MBPs
What is the best (& stabilised) way to sync 2 MBPs?
I'll play: MBP 10.11.6, maschine, APC40 & bass. I have Impact Twin SC.
My friend: MBP 10.11.6, Gtr, Voc, Farfisa & midi keyboard wih soundcard (I dont know which brand)
I plan to input Gtr, bass, mic and farfisa to my SC (it has 4 inputs)
I saw this:
https://www.ableton.com/answers/how-can ... m-together
Is there latency over wireless?
We dont care about cables (midi i mean) our most concern is stability.
Midi, ethernet (is it even possible?), wireless, what is the best way to sync?
Any advices about sync (and more tricks about the set up) is appreciated.

Re: sync 2 MBPs
There is no better solution for syncing tempo of two devices than Ableton Link.
By 'better' I mean both easier to set up and most consistent. Also, most capable of catching up to any surprise tempo changes with the least consequences.
Are you sure you want to rule out Link? Every other option is so bad, that they are the reason Link was invented. Because it is better.

Re: sync 2 MBPs
You can use it through wifi or network cable.
In my experience network cable was slightly more stable on my Windows computers. I don't know if it had to do with cheap wifi adapters or a cheap wifi home setup.
I have connected through LAN cables to my local network and it stays synced always, never drops. Some have reported syncing using a cable directly between the two computers. I have not tried this myself.
You can only get so much feedback. Best way to decide is to try it.
Midi sync has had so many wacky issues in the past. Determining master/slave clock, deciding if you want hardware or software to lead, computers running at different speeds, and extremely ungraceful for trying to catch back up or re-align.
It is very easy to try. Have both computers on the same home network and turn on Link for both. It's already set up.
You can look up YouTube vids of people testing it out of you're unable to test it this moment. The timing is very tight for what it is, and certainly tighter than midi clock.

This is someone using Link over wifi, which I would say is the 'least' reliable. Notice how dramatically he changes the tempo and how they all keep up.

Re: sync 2 MBPs
trust link, network cable between the 2 comps and you're set. I have already performed live on stage with 2 laptops, LAN cable and LINK.

No worries. It's funny because Link has been this quiet revolution for those that really needed it. Some awareness raising from abes may be in order.alpertt wrote:My friend comes long way, thats why i asked before try

Have fun.
Re: sync 2 MBPs
I will definitely try link.
Wired LAN possibility is also a good option, i didn't know that.
Thanks a lot, it seems i've underestimated Link.
