Pop&Click when adding Tracks, Plugins, etc

Post by udolinsky » Tue Aug 23, 2016 6:56 pm

I have a new Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 audiointerface … because of the low latency …
Well, it works good at 64 Samples (RTL about 6ms) … but, when i add a new track, or a plugin, etc a shot pop/click appears … just in the moment while adding a new element
And that only happens while the song/clip plays …
When i change to 128 Samples the pop dissapears …
So … is my system (1 Year old Macbook Pro with 2,3 Ghz and 16GB and SSD) not capable of the 64 Samples option? Or is the low latency talk by focusrite just advertising but not good working?
Or is there another reason for this?
Thanks!

Have you tried asking Focusrite? I notice the driver was last updated in 2014, before your OS version was released. They'd know about compatibility and issues with later OS versions. Or Ableton?

One thing I can recommend, even if it might not be the culprit here, is to turn off app nap for Live. I gad some glitches that disappeared when I did that.

This is the 2nd generation of the scarlett with different drivers than the old one (the 2014 driver you mention). But i'll check the focusrite support …

Pops and clicks are a classic symptom of a slow system - up the samples and live with the latency or upgrade your machine...

Ahh, OK. Then it shouldn't really be old drivers then.

Actually I notice your MBP likely is this late 2013 model which has a Geekbench 3 multicore score of 13357 and is soon 3 years old. Not that this makes a great difference though. The latest MBPs are from mid 2015 and the 2.8 model has a score of 14317 (about 7% faster) and the 2.5 model 13856 (about 4% faster).

Compare that to the Skylake equipped iMacs of 2015 where the 4.0 model has a Geekbench 3 MC score of 17368. Of course the GB3 numbers are only an indicator and doesn't translate directly to actual performance.

The MBP range is currently in great need of a significant update, which ought to happen this autumn. Don't get me started on Mac Pros.

You also have the issue of Intel Speedstep, that I think is a more rare problem space these days than it may have been in the past.

what's the latency on 128 samples versus 64? I suspect you won't hear the difference unles you're a good keyboard player (like me - and I still can't hear the difference!)

I got my old audiophile 2496 set to 256 samples giving less than .1 second latency - could go lower but what's the point?
