newb question about recording hard synth sounds to live
Hi,
I have a roland jdxi and am looking to record to ableton live.
When I hook the jdxi up to live through USB I am able to record the keystrokes but not the sound I hear through my headphones connected directly to my jdxi. I know I can drag and drop similar sounds to the recorded keystrokes but would like to know if it is possible to get the sound I hear through my headphones connected to my synth into live for editing. Thanks.

Plug the audio output of the synth to an audio input on your computer.

Actually, it looks like the synth has audio through USB also.
Go into Live audio preferences.
For Input, select your synth.
Then either use 'external instrument' device in Live, or create a whole audio channel. And make either of those receive audio from that input.

Thanks for the reply. When I do this I am able to capture the keystrokes on the synths keyboard but not the sounds. Any idea why this might be?yur2die4 wrote:Actually, it looks like the synth has audio through USB also.

Re: newb question about recording hard synth sounds to live
Are you doing audio preferences or midi preferences?
Midi preferences is midi notes.
Audio preferences is the actual audio.
Go to Live 'preferences'
Choose the 'audio' tab. And notice there is 'input' and 'output'.
After that is set up. You need to make a device or channel and set it to have 'input' as your synth audio.
Do this either by making an audio channel (not midi channel)
Or making a midi channel and adding the device called 'external instrument' and setting it to receive audio from the audio of the synth.
If you're recording, it might be easiest to make the audio channel.

Will try this again. And just to check, am I able to send the midi notes through USB? Thanks.yur2die4 wrote:Are you doing audio preferences or midi preferences?

If Live is able to record your keystrokes then you are sending MIDI.
