How to record auto-generate MIDI?
How to record auto-generate MIDI?
Hello,
I am playing around with Instant House by Alexkid.
I am fairly new to this.
Something odd: I turn Instant House on and it generates beats. However I cannot record the generated MIDI notes (e.g. generate a clip as it is generating).
I can create another MIDI track and take as input the track where Instant House is running but I cannot find a way to record a clip on the same track where Instant House is running, not sure why.

You cannot record a clip from this sort of device on the same track.
Not 100% sure why, but I believe it might be due to the fact that anything happening in a clip is actually BEFORE any midi effect loaded on the channel is applied.
Hierarchy sort of thing.
It's the same deal if you use Live's native scale, velocity, pitch etc. etc. effects.

Re: How to record auto-generate MIDI?
Can you...I'm kinda making this up as I go along but it sounds a similar issue to one I had...can you put the output of Alexkid track going into another MIDI track, monitor on.
So now if you record into arrangement view, can you record midi or audio in that monitor track?
Can you not use copy that back into session view? Bit roundabout, and def not for on-the-fly stuff, but could something along those lines help?

Thank you "The_Subject", it is what I do as a workaround... but would be nice to being able to actually record on a clip that is actually on the track where InstantHouse is running... and understand why it doe not work
"jonbenderr" I think you must not be far from the actual answer "anything happening in a clip is actually BEFORE any midi effect loaded on the channel is applied"...
Would be nice to get a more detailed / fact answer by someone else...

Re: How to record auto-generated MIDI?
I looked around another great generator: Time&Timber by Skinnerbox https://www.ableton.com/en/packs/time-t ... kinnerbox/
There plugin GUI have a "Convert!" button that generates a clip of what is playing (the randomly generated MIDI pattern).
I tried to record the signal on the same track where it is generated (hit 'record' button on an empty clip slot) and it does not work either: you have to use the 'Convert!' button if you want to keep a copy... I don't understand why this 'workaround' of a button is needed

Re: How to record auto-generate MIDI?
hey there, if you want to record midi from "time", you need to do it on another midi track and route the midi signal to it. the convert button is mainly there in order to generate 6 midi clips (one for each channel) and give you true polyrhythm with no headache. (if you record a polyrythmic / polymetric sequence via midi you possibly need to wait a very long time until you will reach a loop point)
for further info please check the manual

*edit
the reason you cannot record midi on the same track from "time" or "instant house" or any other midi device you might try is that the midi recording takes place pre device and not post device
