about VST automation recording in Live

Post by acYm » Fri Jan 13, 2017 4:01 am

I've done a bit of research on the subject. It seems that people have been trying to tell Ableton for several years, but they simply don't seem to understand. Let me attempt to make this very clear. I'm being quite literal here, despite the use of images.

The following is the automation data that my vst plugins are showing to Live.

Now, this is the automation data that Live is recording and playing back.

Any questions?

It doesn't bother you? I thought you guys at Ableton actually used your product to make music?

I don't seem to have this problem. Got a specific example ?

Can you post an actual example of your "issue"?

I have never had issues with automation. Maybe you are doing something wrong.

I'm not trolling. 22 values were recorded. I sent roughly 250. Garbage.

Option.txt gives you the ability to change how refined the recording of the automation steps...

A search in the forum should help....

Can't say I've ever had this problem - but here's my non-expert list of the things I would check first:

Any controller software (like novation automap) these translation interfaces from usb plug to DAW often like being disobedient.

MIDI settings - what takeover mode are you on? If so, try a different one.

MIDI settings - what takeover mode did you just try? If so, try the third one.

What controller are you using? Is it just a a bit lame or is it semi-professional gear or better that you expect to work 100%

What effect are you automating? Does it have integers in someway or somewhere along any macros line? I mean, hooking up a drop-down menu or a button to a dial (or anything with reasonably limited selections), and your bound to have 250 settings on the dial, but they'll break down into as many equal parts as your limited number of options.

Contrary to what I just said, you probably wont have 250 values, you'll probably have 128, 0-127.

Yeah but actually learning and doing research on things is all too hard. Much easier to bitch about something when one hits an issue...

Perhaps the triangle could be an alternative? You still need to know velocity of hit vs amplitude of signal tho, may be a hard one to master.

It probably took more time to find those pictures than searching the forum or website...
I love the garbage-mountain picture though!

ThinningAggressiveness is only valid for arrangement view, maybe I should have specified that I'm talking about session recording. I understand that being able to record motion sequences at all is a new thing since v9 but this custom setting appears to be way old. Gross oversight.

@the_subject if I'm talking about recording realtime automation I'm probably using Kore, Nocturn or something similar, and therefore I don't have 128 values, I have 65536.

Huh. Thanks, I did not know this. Briefly used Novation Nocturn, if thats what you mean, but didn't get far with it. Never used Kore.
