Ableton for an Arts installation, +30 days non-stop ?

Post by Transcultur » Wed Feb 01, 2017 2:18 pm

Does anyone here used Ableton Live for an installation , having the program running for very long periods of time would be an issue ? Lets say 30 days runing a Set with a max patch.
Any previous experiences ?

Ableton Live by itself should be no problem. I haven't done what you intend to do, but I'm one of those guys that never shuts down his computer (just close the lid) and Live is always running.

I have not noticed any instability because of this.

Now regarding the M4L patch.....
That depends very, very much on the M4L patch.

Thanks for getting back!

Its not a "too complicated" patch if that exists :-) i think it would not be too much of an issue as far as i could prototype in sketches.

So basically live is fine most of the time according to you if I dont abuse of 3d party plugins and expensive VST´s to avoid further complications + optimizing the patch to dont have the computer working constantly every frame caluculating expensive demands abusively otherwise i guess problems can appear in short ther

Some very very simple Max patches can be critical in long periods.
I remember on a recent installation that a patch using just plugsync~ and udpsend to send the current beat out of a network was causing live crash after a few hours.

yeah, 3rd party vsts are usually ok, especially when they are from known vendors and no issues are reported.

M4L stability is a whole different can of worms though.

thanks for the hint.

As far as it goes is just sonification of quantized data stream into midi notes inside a m4l midi effect , so all "heavy" audio procesing is done by Live, thats why seemed relevant to ask guys in this forum , thanks again!

I did an installation some years ago for Toronto's Nuit Blanche that lasted a week. It was running Live with MIDI Yoke (MIDI Yoke was there to enable automated movement between scenes) for the audio on one computer , which was controlling a second computer (via midi cable) running Modul8 for the video part. It ran for a week with no problems. I didn't use M4L though, so can't help there.

Update

Sounds nice , of course ableton is the most stable part of the whole thing . When its involving arduino, max , ableton , udp ports...

It works for the moment the job is done , it runs for days without problems

Lets see how it will behave in the hospitals after 1 month.

I will keep updated till the presentation then I will be able to share documentation

I've had Live running two different installations simultaneously with max for live patch and eowave sensor box. No problems there.
We programmed the computer automatically to shut down and start + starting Live though.

Good to know,I will check it out.
Yes indeed, in mac was really easy to implement automized startup.
There is no screen, so we can control it with team viewer from any location + few parameters on any phone browser GUI with two ways communication with live , using miraweb .
