USB 3.0 Flash Drive as backup drive for project files

Post by Cactus factus » Sun Feb 12, 2017 1:54 am

USB 3.0 Flash Drive Features:
Stylish and secure USB 3.0 flash media thumb drive
Meets the demands of high-res audio and video production
USB 3.0 provides bus power and up to 150MB/s data transfer
Easy-to-use password protection lets you secure your files
Durable metal housing shrugs off routine wear and tear
Would this work as a backup drive for Ableton project files as opposed to a 3.0 SSD external hard drive? Something I can carry around with me.SanDisk Ultra Flair USB 3.0 Flash Drive as an example.

Yes! I have one, but only as a second backup that run once every hour for current projects only, keeping previous versions for two weeks. I also back up to a really big disc three times a day.

it will be a lot slower than an SSD, especially at writing data (you will notice that write speeds are not mentioned on the SanDisk website)...

Truth right there. The write speed isn't even listed for that particular drive.

Get this instead: https://www.sandisk.com/home/usb-flash/extremepro-usb. I use this on a daily basis for transferring files. It's pricy, but fast as shit.

I use that exact same drive as well, very fast and reliable.

My USB memory only writes at 5 MB/s and I don't notice this. I don't understand this thing about it having to be fast.

My backup app Qrecall will only copy the new bits inside files to the archive so it doesn't take that long for my current projects even at this slow write speed. It goes on my keychain and is always with me. That and the fact it had a good price. only does the hourly backups, makes this work for me. You don't need to overdo everything.
