this technical issue might make me ditch Live

because it's extremely ghetto.

I'm trying to update from 9.7 Standard to 9.7.3. Standard.

My Ableton Live is installed on the C: system drive. I don't give half a flying shit which of my external or internal drives the setup.msi that I downloaded to install the program might have been on - in any case, apparently it's not there anymore. Now, because of this, it seems that I can neither update OR uninstall Live. If I try to update, I get the "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package" error message, and it fails. If I try to uninstall the program fully, "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable." and again, no success.

What could possibly be more ghetto than this? Seriously? Ok, other than purposely filtering out poly-aft, what could possibly be more ghetto than this?
Serious inquiry.

What has happened is that the original installer unpacks the msi into windows/temp/
you have at some point emptied windows/temp, completely deleted everything in there, probably to save space.
Now the uninstaller can't find the manifest. it's a problem with a lot of windows app installers, they use /temp to put important things in, and they shouldn't

So, what you do is go and get Revo uninstaller and use the months free trial- then select the old Live from the list and uninstall the old version. Revo can scrub orphaned apps without the now deleted .msi file.

^^^ The issue does not sound like a live issue it sounds more like a typical windows file issue.

Do some research on force uninstalling applications. You may even be able to delete the progam manually and use something like CCleaner to clean up the registry etc.

Make sure when running the installer you right-click and choose "Run as administrator"

Also, UNZIP the install file first before running it. If you just run it from within the zip file you will end up having it run from the temp drive and you could be having an issue if your install is running from a network share too. Unzip and copy to your desktop or something.

Lastly, you can enable auto updates within Live itself so you don't need to download the file.

Nothing "ghetto" about any of it, just windows being windows.

Exactly. And there's nothing Ableton about it either.

I have been using windows since 3.1 and I don't think I've ever seen this before.

WHY THE HELL are the resources needed to do ANYTHING AT ALL with ableton NOT located safely in the Ableton directories?
who the fuck puts anything in Temp?
there is absolutely NO justification whatsoever for this.

I want someone from Ableton's offices to contact me so that they can get inside my desktop through teamviewer and fix this shit, I don't want to have to think about this crap.

auto-update doesn't seem to be doing anything, I'm guessing it's hitting the same problem internally.

I'm an artist! I DEMAND special treatment!

look, it doesn't really matter if I can't un-install, nobody should ever have a reason to un-install Live, but getting in the way of my updates? wow.

I'm already in contact with support trying to resolve an issue, now I'd have to request support to do the steps required to troubleshoot my other problem? fan fucking tastic. where the fuck will it end?

I understand you're frustrated, but if you're just going to vent no one is going to be able to help you here.

Using windows since 3.1, can't uninstall a program or troubleshoot an install file?

yeah yeah never mind I got it all sorted out, did a manual uninstall as that was indeed the only way, it's still insanely ghetto.

Loads of us here have been using live for many years (12 or so in my case) and gone through many installs and upgrades on both windows and OSX.
I cannot ever recall an issue with the install or upgrade of Live.

At a guess - you have been messing with windows, or you you have one of these pc tidy type apps (that generally do far more harm than good) that has been messing with windows.

=> Self inflicted.
